LE - Period 9

Hello everyone.

As I said in class today, this week’s assignment is about looking back on the year so far. I want you to see where you think you did your best, where you did less than your best, and what you can learn from both of them. I would also like to know what have been the topics or projects that have enjoyed most and why.

Please be thoughtful in your responses, and aim for about 1 page.

I look forward to reading your responses to me and to each other.

    How Ive been doing

This past year I have tryed my best to impress my parents. But when I that I have 5 state tests then I started to wonder about the future. Ive tryed my best in all my classes (including science). I have gotten over most of my laziness (not doing homework) and Ive been putiing more work on the blog for science. I think Ive really improved. I am also posting very early (1st one to comment :) ). Ive been doing better with other people too (making new friends and enemys :( ) Ive also been trying to make my blog work llonger. Ive been doing good this past year and I will try to reach perfection at school (straight As) until the end of the year.

And to add on to what you said, I’m usually second or third to comment on your piece (they are very interesting;)) I’m sure you have been doing better. You’ve done a great job!

Note, I was trying to make a smiley face but it didn’t work, that’s why their is a semi-colon and two parenthasis.

    Sorry :)

Reflection of my performance this year

I can’t say I havent been procrastinating almost as much as i did in past years, but i get all or most of my work in on time and i am improving… slowly. I really enjoyed learning about genetics this year because i found it very interesting… and also because my mom had no clue what i was telling her if she asked me what i learned in science :P. So far, I think I am doing well this year, but I could improve and I think I might need to for the tests is June.

    My Year in Review

This year has been a very interesting year, mostly because of the prepping for all the state tests. I have done a better job in all my academics (art is another story…). I have done better than what I expected on all my report cards (again, art is excluded). I have kept my parents happy (you can exclude art for everything right now).

At the beginning of the year, I was fretting about how there were going to be all these state tests (at least two of which really count for the future) and that I was going to be in 9th grade math and high school was less than 10 months away and… the list goes on. Now, I have realized that it is easier than I once thought. Foreign Language, for the most part, has been a review. Science is as good as it was last year (in a good way). The only down sides have been all the HW from Daniel and all the essays from Powers.

It has helped me a lot that I have gotten a flash drive (but as of this writing I think I have broken someone else’s flash drive).

Going back to a science point of view, it has been interesting. Mr. Ardito (you, if you are reading this) have been getting all these new ideas, like the blog for instance, that I never did last year. All the topics have been mind-absorbing.

So far, it’s been a great year!

    Svogthir:

I’m scared of the big tests in June also. Hopefully they will be easier than we think they are! You did a good job!

    Review of the Year

I think that over this year I have done quite well but it is not my greatest work. In the beginning of the year I was doing very good but getting into the year I have been losing my head and have not been doing well. But this quarter I hope to do better. I am kind of worried about all of these tests that we have to go through at the end of the year and even the State math test coming up next week. I think that once I get through those tests then the rest of the year will be great because then I don’t have to worry anymore and I can just relax. Hopefully I do good on the state tests and any other test that other teachers give out including the essays that Ms. Powers is giving for the rest of the year. What I have learned about my best and my worst part of the year is that I need to keep trying and just do my best with every academic and specials class for the rest of the year. Some of the projects/topics I liked were the web projects for evolution and if we do them for any other topic coming up would be good. I can’t forget the pod-casts with nibbles, Picasso, and t-money which was the best thing we have done this year which was fun. Anyway I think that I need to do better for the rest of the year and I hope I do better and not worry for the rest of the year.

This year in science has been much more successful than last year. Instead of knowing only a little bit about lots of topics we have really gone in-depth in topics. Science this year has taught me the importance of doing your homework. It has become clear to me that we do homework for a reason and it really helps you understand things better. I have also learned the importance of being organized. Next year, losing labs and books will be unacceptable. Also, being organized can help me review for the regents because I will still have review packets, homework, etc. My favorite project this year would have to be the pod casts we made. Working with groups that we got to choose was really fun. Also being able to act stuff out really helps me learn. I have also learned that I am a very visual person. If I draw something or act something out I can remember it much better then if I just write it out.

  • 9    mr.coolguy // Mar 7, 2007 at 8:05 pm

    brown eyed girl:

I really enjoyed the pod-casts too! Remember, next year we start earth science (AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!). You did a good job.

So far, this year has been a really great year for me. I’ve been doing pretty well and I haven’t really struggled too much with anything, though some things were easier for me than others. The less visual things we did, the harder it was for me. It’s much easier for me to learn from physically doing things and seeing things visually. For example, the licorice DNA activity helped me a lot. Same thing goes with the mitosis and meiosis activity where we used the yarn and felt and things. It’s a lot harder for me to learn things by reading about them. Sometimes when I read I’ll get unfocused without realizing it, miss something important and not understand whatever it is I’m reading about. Other times it’s just harder for me to understand it. I also like the idea of a class blog. I like it because you can see how other people are responding to certain things compared to your response. It’s also helpful because before tests and things, or just so we can get a better understanding of the topic, you can put website links up to help us. I have found these links very helpful in the past. I’ve come to realize that eighth grade is much more challenging than seventh grade was in many ways. It’s a big change. This year I’ve been spending more time on my work. My work this year has required more time than my work did last year. As long as I keep my focus, I’m able to do pretty well though.

I agree with you that it is good that we have been going more in-depth in topics, rather than learning little things about a bunch of different topics. I think I had the homework lesson drilled into me the hard way by Ms. Melia last year though, not by Mr. Ardito this year.

This year has been great although I havn’t been doing the best I am having fun. I liked alot of things this year I can’t name them all. Although tests in other classes are hard for me these are just right as my scietific ability. Im enjoying this class and having fun. Keep up the good work!

I think that years been intristing and the same thing is happening to me acidemic wise. Im kinda freaked out about going in to 9th grade. I don’t know if im ready for it. Good Job.

  • 17    opac1 // Mar 8, 2007 at 11:58 am

As of today, I feel that I have had strengths and weaknesses in living environment. Now, I do have more strengths than weaknesses. However, that does not mean that I do not have to improve my academic performance in living environment. I will need to improve my performance, in weakest portions of my performance, in order to be the absolute best student that I can possibly be in living environment. If I am the absolute best student that I can possibly be, there is no doubt in my mind that I will not score less than 100% in the last two marking periods of this school year in living environment. I also feel that I can score better if we do more enjoyable activities in class.

I have much strength when it comes to my performance in living environment. In my opinion, my best strength is these very types of assignments involving the class blog. I have posted nearly all of my necessary blog work when it should be posted, with minimal typos, and with a large amount of high quality content. I also behave well in class. I rarely speak when I should not be speaking, and I always pay attention to the lesson Mr. Ardito is giving. I have yet to arrive late for class, which really helps my grade. In addition to that, I hand in other homework assignments complete and on time. These other assignments consist mainly of the work that we are assigned to complete in the “big UPCO book,” and the “web projects” that we are assigned to complete using Internet resources. I have also scored well on labs, but I occasionally hand them in to Mr. Ardito after the deadline to hand them in has passed. Lastly, I do well on tests. I have yet to not score somewhere within the nineties on any test or quiz that I Mr. Ardito has given.

I have few weaknesses when it comes to my performance in living environment. However, I do feel that I should hand absolutely no assignments past the deadline that was set for said assignments to be handed in. Also, I feel that I can score better on tests. My goal and many people say that I am setting a goal that I will never be able to achieve, is to score 100% or more on every test that I take in living environment. I most definitely think that I am capable of achieving that goal. Other than that, all I have to do is maintain the high level of academic performance that I am currently at as of today.

Now, I think we should do more enjoyable activities. The podcasts were incredibly enjoyable, and I am extremely exited that we are going to be making podcasts once more. As a matter of fact, I hope we make podcasts more than merely once more in living environment. Hopefully, we will be making significantly more podcasts than just the upcoming ones. It is also enjoyable when Mr. Ardito does very hands-on activities using us students. For example, when he used, well I should not say his/her name on the Internet, to demonstrate grafting. That gave me personally a greater understanding of grafting. Another demonstration that I felt was fun to be in the classroom when it was happening was when those two kids did the example of budding. That also gave me a better understanding of the subject matter.

In conclusion, I have demonstrated that I have much strength and little weakness in living environment, but I still know that I have room for improvement. Engaging in enjoyable activities in class will help me score better on my report card for the next two terms. Overall, I am very satisfied with my performance in living environment.

I agree with you about the podcasts, organization and the importance of homework to review for the Regents. I thought that you did a very good job explaining your ideas in your report, but it should have been slightly longer. Overall, your report was very good.

It’s good to hear that you are doing well in science, and that you are handing in your work when it should be handed in. I would have made your report a little longer if I were you, but your report was good nonetheless.

I think in terms of grades, I’ve done pretty well this year. I’ve done pretty well on tests, and have understood most concepts. I definitely need to work on handing things in on time, and making the most out of my time in class. I’ve gradually developed better habits for studying science, and haven’t been as nervous about science tests.

As for the class, I’ve had a really good time. I really enjoy how we use humor in things, and how we do a lot of fun projects together. I truly believe making cells out of cookies and string and making podcasts taught me more than if I’d shared a report with someone. Doing hands on things helps me remember, and I still remember a lot of information in the podcasts. I enjoy that we do so much work in groups, because the assignments are always fun to do, and I learn more working with other people, because I don’t end up drawing on the side of the page for 45 minutes, I’m involved with it.

The only thing I can really think of that I didn’t enjoy were unit tests. I think having a test everyone few weeks instead of every three months is easier, because you don’t have to memorize as much, and if you don’t do well on a unit test, you have way more to study for afterward and for the state tests.

There have definitely been grades I’d like to improve, and things I wish I’d done differently, but overall, I’m satisfied with how I’ve done this year, and I’m going to continue to try my best to do better.

    My Year in Review

Overall, I’m pretty happy with how I did this year. I’ve gotten good grades on all of my report cards and tests (except for a few minor issues in *cough cough* math). But more importantly, I feel like I am really understanding the topics that we are covering. My favorite topic in science was genetics. Reproduction is a lot of fun so far and I’m having a lot of fun planning our reproduction video (teehee). I think that hands on learning helps me to process the information that we learn. For instance, in math or French, we’re given the information and we have to memorize it, but through activities like making the pod casts and the mitosis cookies helped me to actually understand the information, as opposed to simply memorizing it.
Basically, the only things that I am really nervous about in the next few months is the Regents and the proficiency (even though my brother tells me that it’s easy). It’s kind of scary to think that all the things we have been studying all year are going to be in this big test in front of us and we need to remember all the answers. But I’m trying not to worry about that and just focus on learning the material… besides, I can worry about them when I’m taking them!
Some things I’ve learned this year that don’t have to do with science, are that I need to be a lot more organized. Spending five minutes rummaging around in my locker to try to find my UPCO book is not something that I want to happen next year. Also, I need to work on turning in my labs on time. I always have them completed, it’s just a matter on remembering, so I think I should write down when the labs are due and not just leave it to my memory.
But, all things considered, I think I’d have to say that I’m pretty happy with how I’ve done this year. I’ve learned new things, made new friends, and had a lot of great experiences.

This year has been really fun so far. I have really enjoyed the projects we have done. I am surprised at how good I have been doing this year. I think the main that has helped me was the projects. I am much better at hands on stuff than I am at memorizing. I also like fact that we are having more tests, but with less content. This makes it easier to study and focus on only one or two things not the whole unit. I also think the group activities are helping me concentrate. I work will with a group epically with my friends. Some of my favorite activates were the podcast, the cell cookie lab and the website projects. This was a lot better than reading out of a text book. I learn and remember so much more when we do hands on things. I also like when we have to teach things to our classmates. I think it is a great why to learn stuff, become a leader, and have fun. It is cool to know that you taught someone something. It is even better when they understand it. The podcast was probably my favorite thing we did this year. I thought it was so cool that we actually recorded something and put it on websites. Even though it douse not work on itunes it is still cool to hear your voice on other websites. I also like most of the labs we do. Even though we have to fill out sheets later it is really cool to do hands on stuff like we do in the labs. I hope we continue to do fun labs. I also really enjoy doing blog work. I like it better when we have to reflect on something than when we have to do reports on articles. I enjoy reading what other people have to say about my work. This helps me know what I have to improve on.

I am also somewhat weak in the weekly blog work. I always get them in late so I never get many comments because I am always one of the last people to post. I need to work harder on doing them sooner and posting them sooner. I tend to get bored when we are not doing hands on activity. But the good thing about this class is that we mostly do hands on things so I normally always have something exiting to do. When I get bored I tend to not pay full attention. That is one of the things I need to work on. This hasn’t happened in a while so there is not much to worry about.

Overall I have really enjoyed this class. It is easily one of my favorite classes. I have learned so much and the year is not even over. I really like that you are not extremely serious and you are not afraid to joke around. I hope that we continue the hands on activities I really like it. Overall it has been a great year.

    Self Review

Looking back at my previous work, I’ve realized that there are only a few times in this year that I have really worked to my full potential or close to it. I think that most of the reason for this is that there is just too much work to do all of it to the best of my ability. A different reason why my work is not the best I can do is because I tend to wait to the last minute to do my work (procrastinating). This article for example at this point I only have 15 minutes left to complete this before I go to soccer practice.
One of the few times I think I wrote well this year was while we had to write the good or bad brains articles. I think I did a good job writing that article because I took my time writing it, edited it, put some thought into it and I used a lot of true facts. I think that a different reason why I did a good job on that article was because it was something I found very interesting and therefore put more effort into it than I usually would have. I found it very interesting because it was a controversial topic and it did not have one definite answer.
Having said this, the reason why I have not picked more interesting topics on my other articles is because, as I said before I’m a procrastinator and usually don’t have time to find a topic that really interests me. If I fixed this problem of procrastination I think I would write more to the best of my ability most of the time while writing. If I had to judge this article I am writing now I would say that it is one of my better pieces of writing because I thought about writing this all week and so I already new what I was going to write.

  • 27    brooklynmavis22 // Mar 8, 2007 at 8:57 pm

I’m relatively happy with how I’ve done so far this year. At first, I started out a little rocky, but now I think I am getting more into what we are learning. Also, I have gotten much better at keeping organized and handing assignments in on time.
I actually think that, as a whole, I am pretty satisfied with my work on the blog, and with other assignments.
I think my study habits have gradually gotten better, and therefore, I am now getting much better grades on tests and quizzes than previous.
I feel like I understand the topics we discuss and study, and I like the activities we do, so we can really learn the topics we study, as opposed to just memorizing information like in other classes.
I still have to work on my organizational skills and study habits, even though I have improved at both, and also my habit to procrastinate is something else I need to work on.
Conclusively, this is probably my favorite class, aside from the fact that my favorite subject is science, I also enjoy the teaching methods that are used.
There are definately some things I wish I had done differently, and some grades I wish I could have improved. I will continue to try to do better.

  • 28    dusty schmidt // Mar 8, 2007 at 9:32 pm

I think that this year has been getting better for me. I didn’t do so well in science the 2nd quarter, and I feel my work has gotten better since. I play a sport during each season, and it’s harder for me and other people who do the same. Last year, I had Ms. Melia and she really inspired me to do my best. She would make labs and journals just about trying your best. Also because (to me) 7th grade was the first year that school got challenging, and I really didn’t expect it. I’m trying the best that I can and I hope that my teachers notice. I also like when teachers give some freedom in class, like no assigned seats, and stuff like that. I enjoy that privledge in most of my classes, and I think it helps me more with the fact that I don’t have to mad about my seat if I don’t like it.
I think that I’ve been doing a lot better since the beggining of the year, and I’m trying to also enjoy school (if possible) to the highest point.

  • 29    dancingintherain102 // Mar 8, 2007 at 10:01 pm

We have learned a lot of different things this year, and done a lot of different projects. liked evolution and genetics best out of all of our different units. I liked them the most because they were the most straight forward of the topics so, they made the most sense to me.
I had had some previous experience with both genetics and evolution before starting the units. The units were more like going over information I already knew, and then talking it even farther. I already had the basic knowledge to start out with so it was easier to learn the rest of what I had to know.
Evolution is more interesting because it is such a controversial. The interest is because I can form my own opinion on the subject. I can hear and learn about all of the different scientific theory that have been developed, and choose which theory I want to believe in. Unlike most science where everything is already decided for you, it is all proven facts that you can’t try to dispute. Evolution you can make up your own mind and theories about it. It is not already decided for you, you decide for yourself.
Genetics was easier topic being discussed today. There is only one straight or right answer. There is an exact formula to get the right answer, and if you do the formula right you get the answer right. That makes genetics much more basic, and easy to understand.
Some of the projects I felt like I learned the most from are the web projects. This way I can read and see what I am learning about. I can play games on the websites all so I can understand what I need to. I also feel the way we use the upco book helps so that I have something that I can highlight and write in, as a method of studying. It is a good resource to have when doing any studying involving science.
There are a bunch of different projects we have done this year. There have been a bunch of good project and them have helped me learn in different ways. No one type of project or lesson is perfect. Different topics are better shown, taught and learned in different ways.

  • 30    acex2inurface // Mar 8, 2007 at 10:03 pm

I’m really proud of how I start out this year. It started out as an orginized year. I have learned a lot of skills or teaching methods in all of the academics and things I will need to know in the high school. Science this year, I really liked. It was the continuation of 7th grade, but we learned more new and advanced things. When I get my grades or my report card, I see my grades and make a goal to go beyond it. Unfortunatly, I have a very bad problem that happens to me every year. When I get into my 3rd quarter, I slow down. Not just for science, but for anything. It happens to me naturally, so this is the habit I’m trying to break.
I think I did the best in science was the labs. I actually enjoyed the lab projects (burning food!) and I was able to hand in all labs on time! I think I can improve on understanding the subject more. I think the reason that I sometimes get low grades on tests is because I don’t understand it. I will like to work on asking teachers more often. I will definally recommend any other class to do a podcast. That was a great way to learn the subject and to study the subject. It was an amazing experience that I’ll never forget.

    Reflection on this Year

So far, my year has been okay. When I miss something, I feel really far behind, and it is hard for me to catch up.
Usually a bad problem that I have is that once I start to see good grades on my report cards, I start to slack. I am trying to better this year though, not only because this year is important, but also because it is something I should have done a while ago.
I also procrastinate. I wait until the last minute do do something. I distract myself from doing whatever I need to do, so I don’t do it until I need to. I also need to work on that.
Some things that I liked this year are the podcasts, and I also like making posters illustrating whatever we are learning at the time. The podcasts are fun because we can be creative with it. We can present it in the podcast in whatever way we want and I like that.
I really like that fact that we can correct our tests, because sometimes I don’t do so well on a test and it makes me feel better when we at least have a chance to make up some of the questions that we missed.
So far this year, I have learned a lot. I have also learned new techniques for learning things. This year will definetly be one that I won’t forget easily.

For this week’s blog work, we were supposed to reflect on how we have done throughout this year of Living Environment. I think that I have done a pretty good job of keeping up with everything that has been assigned in class so far. I have handed in almost everything on time and I always try to do my best job when doing work. Some of the best work I have done so far this year has been a part of the genetics unit. Since genetics is so detailed and particular, there is no way that I really could have did great in the unit without fully understanding every bit of it. I also am very interested in the topic of genetics, which helped me stay focused and try my hardest. One area that I think I have not done my best work is responding to people’s weekly science articles. Most of the time, my comments are very similar, but just with a little bit of a change, just because everyone’s topic is different. From now on I am going to try and make my comments longer and much more detailed. Some of the activities and projects I have really enjoyed are the podcasts and blog work. I feel like both of these things let us be more interactive and have more fun with our topics. With the podcasts, it was a lot of fun because we could do the work, while having fun. We learned a lot because we kept on going over the script, which really helped me get the information in my head. The blog work is also very cool because we can choose from so many different articles that there is a lot of freedom. It has really helped me develop my skill of writing reflections and summaries to science articles.

  • 33    eyesticker03 // Mar 10, 2007 at 3:50 pm

This year has been relatively easy for me. I haven’t had much trouble with the curriculum in most classes, although some things are easier for me than others are. I think doing class work hands-on is much more helpful than reading in textbooks. I have found that when I am shown examples or even if I can take part in them I am more likely to understand it.
I am concerned about the up-coming tests that we take at the end of the year but I think I will be prepared for them. I think reviewing what we have done through the year will help keep things fresh in our minds. We have plenty of field trips and end of the year activities to look forward to, so hopefully they won’t distract me too much. I have never really been a procrastinator (at least not often) and I want to make sure I keep up with my school work until the year finishes.

I agree with your point of how different topics are shown better in different ways. You did well explaining your summary of this year. Good Job!

I like how you mentioned how you would improve on your academics this year and what exactly you would do to improve them. Good Job!

There was a small mistake in my last comment. Instead of saying “I liked how you mentioned…” I said “I like how you mentioned…”

I totally agree with you about having to know basic info before really getting into it i also agree with you about evolution. I think that because it is so controversial it makes it more intersting to learn.

    Good job!

This year I think I have done well. In class I have tried very hard to pay attention. I think I have done very well on my tests and quizzes. I study really hard and because I try to pay attention in class I don’t need to learn anything new, just go over some things to be sure I know them.
I enjoy all of the projects that we do. They are always interesting and fun to do. My favorite has been the pod casts. They are really fun to make and watch/hear. I’m really excited for the upcoming one where my group is doing a video on the male reproductive system.
I need to work on handing my labs in early. I never remember the due dates even though I write them down. I always have them finished but I forget to hand them in. I think this quarter I have been better about handing things in on time and getting my work done.
I like doing work in science that we can do hands on work with. It is easier to remember things because each one is different. It makes people pay more attention because we do things that we want to do.

Great response, I am the exact same when about the hands-on stuff. I learn so much better that way rather than just plain reading a text book.

Your report was good. I remember Ms. Melia giving us labs and journals we had to write and they were pretty easy. I agree with the privileges and that does help and relief some stress. Great job.

Your report was good. I figured out that in all of the reports that the people in our class have typed had the pod-casts in them including you. I think that it is hard to do long comments so I agree. Great job.

I agree with you. Doing the licorice lab really hepled me out to understand how the DNA copies itself. You said how doing the things to learn is better than reading out of a text book. I also agree with you on that. Good job.

in the past year, i have been trying hard in my classes to make my parents proud, but i do think there is room for improvement. i really liked the podcasting. i think i learned more from that than anything i’ve done this year. since music is easier to remember than plain old sentences, i really remembered most of the song we wrote. “T-Money, Picaso, Nibbles and M-Zizzle are here to rap about the feeding relationships-izzle.” good stuff. i think i could improve on my labs and some of my WSR’s. i could put some more effort into them.
