7th Grade Science

Welcome back from the break.

This week I would like you to write a weekly science article report. For this round, please choose an article that has to do with health in some way. See if you can connect it to what we are learning about cells and they perform their life functions.

I look forward to reading your work and your comments.

    I found article at:
    http://www.croton-harmonschools.org/default.html
All you have to do is think about moving your hand and there it moves but people who have lost their arms are not so lucky, they have to use clumsy devices that are difficult to operate until fairly recently when a new artificial arm was invented that attached to the nerves in your chest so that that person can move the artificial arm as you or I move ours they can also feel heat through there new limb.

I found this article vary interesting I find it fascinating that wires and plastic can atonally convey heat and I wonder if someday they will atonally be able to make a robot-human.

This article is called Hot Summers, Wild Fires. This article is by Emily Sohn. I found this article on http://www.scincenewsforkids.com. This article is about how in really hot summer cause really huge dangerous forest fires. Wild fires cause hundreds of millions of dollors in damage every year and the amount of destruction has increased over the last 2 decades, especially in the Western United States.

I liked this article. Good job.

    Penguins
When one thinks of Antarctic wildlife, penguins are often the first animals that come to mind. Indeed these graceful, yet comical; hardy yet elegant creatures are considered by many to be the signature species of the polar south. That is why we decided to create a separate section devoted to the many penguin species and their fascinating characteristics.
Early Antarctic explorers actually thought penguins were fish and classified them accordingly. In fact, as birds, they are superbly designed for their job, flying underwater with great skill. Natural enemies of the penguin include seals, killer whales and, in the case of young chicks and eggs, several species of seabirds. Healthy adult penguins have no predators on land, so they have no natural fear of humans.

    Dance Dance revolution

Dance Dance revolution (DDR) is an addictive way to lose weight and get into shape. Kid’s health and fitness is more important today because we have video games, TV and computers. More and more kids are becoming couch potatoes. DDR is a video game played on a gaming system but it is not your typical video game.

This game gets your heart pumping your feet moving. You move your feet to the arrow on the screen. The arrows move up, down, right and left. The DDR also helps you loss weight! Many kids don’t like the typical physical activities. When you play keep a water bottle near by because you’re going to need it.

I like this article because I like playing video games. I also like playing DDR. It is a rely cool game. Fitness and heath are relying important in your life

    A New Touch.

    By E Sohn.
many people who have an artifical arm or leg find these devices clumsy and difficult difficult to operate. Now, researchers from the rehabilitation institute of Chaicago and their Coworker have moved a step closer toward this goal. They have developed a way that could evenually allow people to feel heat and other sensations through their new limbs. In your body, the nervous system carries messages from your brain to your muscles, telling them what to do. The nerve cells in your hand receive electrons signals that make the finger muscles move.
In a recent study, the first woman to have the proceduer felt normal when she moved it.

I liked this artical because it tought me about artificeal ares how how it is to learn hoe to move it

    Island Extinctions
    Report written by Pooky star

I got this article from http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com and it is written by E. Sohn.

This article is about how in Australia people have caused lots of species to extinction. The article said that People arrived in Australia about 50,000 years ago. Soon after, many of the island’s large mammals disappeared, new evidence suggests. It also explained that it wasn’t climate change that made the extinction happen, it was us. Those extinct species could not be found anywhere else.

I thought that this article was good, though I wonder what humans did to make all those species extinct. In case you were wondering some of the spesies that went extinct were: relatives of kangaroos, wombats and some other creatures found nowhere else.

    The color of health

This article is about how diffrent colors of fruits and vegstables

I though this article was very interesting like how it was about how how brightly colored foods have like bult in sun screen and the green foods like spinach, broccoli, and dark green lettuces are good Pale iceberg lettuce packs little chemical bang per bite. For reds, strawberries and other berries are best, and tomatoes are tremendously healthy. Carrots, oranges, sweet potatoes, and squash all shine among the yellow/orange foods. i thought that was very cool that the color of food makes a difference in wats healthier and it kind of makes me want to eat more fruits and veggies

    hahahahahahahah

This articles date is Feb. 28 2007
    By Emily Sohn
    http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20070228/Note2.asp

This article was about how scientists are using artificial ligaments to cure knee injuries. The ligaments have rabbit cells to cure the regular ligaments while the artificial ligament dissolves.

Overall I thought this was a very good article. I thought Emily Sohn did a great job explaining her main points. I thought she did this when she explained how the artificial ligaments work. I also thought she did a good job in explaining her main points when she explained what ligaments are, what they do, and how they work.

This article was related to cells because they use rabbit cells in the artificial ligament, so that while the artificial ligament dissolves the rabbit cells repair the natural ligament.

Some things I think she could have done better are say more about the football player from the New England patriots and if he’s getting an artificial ligament and if so, how he is doing with it.

Overall I thought this article was very good, I would give it an A.

    A Fix for Injured Knees
    http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org
    by P. Barry

The article I readed is about sciantists trying to find a way to repair torn knee ligaments. A knee ligament is small tight bands that keep your knee together. Cato T. Laurencin and a bunch of other scientist at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville are trying to find a way to fix knee ligaments. There is already a way but it is very painful. They what use a fake ligament instead of a really ligament that surgeons use.

I thought it was a very good article. It gave me new information about the knee and what keeps it together. I like reading articles that give you more information about the subject. I would recomend this article to any one that is reading this report.

    Tyrannosaurus-Science Daily-Publishing date unknown

I recently went to the Museum of Natural History for the 1,000th time. Most of the time I pay attention to the caveman part, and the space part, but for the first time in a long time, I got really interested in the dinosaur part. So for my weekly article report I researched the Tyrannosaurus rex.
When i was reserching, I read a bunch of article. Some were good, others on the other hand, were not so good.
I decided to write my article report on Tyrannosaurus from Science daily for a few reasons.
One reason was that is was simple. Since I really did want to learn something, it was important that the article I read was simple and easy to understand. I think that is a major key to writing a good science article: Making it simple and understandable.
Another reason I chose this article was that it had great facts. Though the article was only about one fifth of a page, I still feel like I learned alot and I think that’s important too.
Though I sound like I’m in love with this article I’ll be the first to admit it’s not perfect. When I’m researching somthing I like to fun facts. To me, fun facts are facts that are cool, short, and not really all that important. This article didn’t reaLly have any. It also only had one small picture. It may just be me, but I think pictures really help send a message. Don’t get me wrong the article was good, just not great.

    Hot Pepper, Hot Spider

    Information

This article was written by Emily Sohn on November 15, 2006 and was found on the website address: http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20061115/Note2.asp.

    Summary

This article talked about how the thing in hot peppers that touches a cell in your body called capsaicin is the same thing as when a tarantula bites you. They both go for capsaicin. Throughout the article it talks about the venom and the spiciness are connected in some way and how scientists in the future hope to create a drug to prevent this pain.

    Reflection

I can describe this article in one word: TERRIBLE! It was confusing, short, boring and I couldn’t understand some of the vocabulary. I mean sure it had pictures, but without any understandable article to back them up with they are completely useless! I’m sorry Emily but this was horrible! Not your best work!

We all have to take antibiotics
    By Emily Sohn

    http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com

This artical is about a new antibiotic that amazingly kills bacteria. Antibiotics were developed more than 50 years ago and today most work the same as the early kinds did. But the antibiotic Platensimycin
works different. It attacks an enzyme that bacteria
needs to build and maintain membrains in their cells.
The neat thing about Platensimycin is it exists in nature. Platensimysin is found as a small molecule made by bacteria that lives in soil in South Africa.

I feel this was a well written artical.

    Science News for Kids
    A Fix for Knee injuries
    P. Barry.

This article talk about knew ways of helping ligament damage in the knee. It said that scientist have dome up with a fake substance to replace it.

I liked this article. It gave very good detail about what a ligament does, how it brakes, and what they are doing to restore it. I liked this because it is a problem in sports, especially football. Ligament damage used to be repaired by scraping of skin from you thigh but know they have a fake material to replace that. Hopefully this can make recovery time much faster. This article would have been better if they interviewed someone or got someone else’s opinion.

    Website URL: http://sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20070207/Feature1.asp

The article I read is called, “Eat Out, Eat Smart”. It is by Emily Sohn, February 7, 2007 from Science News for Kids.

This article is about the unhealthy portions that you buy at most restaurants. It talks about how people do not know how many calories they are consuming and how healthier food is not harder to produce and fills you up just as much. Some places in the country are making nutritional requirements for restaurants so that food is healthier and people know what they are eating by nutritional facts on the menus. They did a study and were able to deduce that people, who eat at home a majority of the time, consume 300 less calories a day then people who eat out all the time. That is partially to do with the unhealthy foods served at restaurants and partially because healthier foods (fruits, veggies etc.) are eaten in people’s houses. The article also says that normally people assume the calorie content is 50 percent less then it actually is when eating out and people also eat healthier if they are shown the nutrition facts. It is a problem though, because establishments won’t necessarily want to do this because it could mean extra expenses on their part.

I really couldn’t connect this article to cells even though it was about health. It was a good article though. It gave a lot of information on foods and nutrition and I learned things that I had no idea about. For example, I knew that it was always healthier to eat home cooked food but I didn’t realize how drastic the difference was between the amounts of calories in the foods. It made a lot of good points about studies and food and I definitely learned a lot from it. I thought it was a good length. I didn’t see the writer cramming lots of information into a short article or stretching out the article so it was long and boring. I guess it could be considered a tiny bit lengthy but the information in the paragraphs were important and not pointless. There were plenty of examples and studies to support what the writer was talking about. You could tell it was thoroughly researched because of all the numbers and results that were added in. This is a very important health issue and that was the way it was portrayed in this article.

    A Fix for Injured Knees
This article was very interesting and informative. It talked about a new way to fix injured knees and made references to athletes. I like this article because it wasn’t to long to read and was informative. It relates to cells, because when someone hurts their knee, or rips something in their knne, they hurt or kill cells.

A Sour Taste In Your Mouth
    by
    E. Sohn

    Aug. 30, 2006

This article, A Sour Taste In Your Mouth, is about the cells in your tongue that allow you to enjoy or “gag” the certain flavors that your tongue touches. Scientist have been researching the cells that allow us to detect these five tastes, salty sweet, bitter, sour, and umami. Scientists understand the sweet bitter, and umami, Scientist have recently figured out how our tongue detects the sour tastes. They found out that each cell contains a receptor (inside tongue cells). One cell may have a sweet receptor and another may have another cell that only responds to bitter flavors. Scientist thinks that the protein PKD2L1, a protein found in the tastes bud cell that only senses sour things. This protein does not show up in the cells that sensed sweet, bitter, and umami things. Researchers did test on mice that did not make the PKD2L1 protein. The mice responded to all of the flavors except the sour ones.

We are studying cells in science class. Cells are what make up living things. We learned about all the different parts of the cell. I picked this article because I thought it was interesting that cells are what make us taste certain flavors. I thought it was going to be about the cells in our tongue that determine why we like or dislike certain flavors. Maybe they will find that out next. E. Sohn wants to know. “Why do some people like to eat sour candy?”….and then some people don’t.

    The Basketball Gets Slick
    By Emily Sohn
This article is about how the NBA is trying a new kind of ball. The original balls had a leather cover, but the new balls are covered in this special plastic. Spalding thinks that the new balls work better than the leather cover, which tests proved. But Texas scientists disagree, and say that the balls are less bouncy, slippery when wet with sweat, and will more likely bounce off course. Scientists slid the old and new balls on silicon to test friction. When it’s dry, the old balls slide easier, but when it was wet the balls became slippery. So after these results, the NBA returned to the old ball on January 1st.
I like this article because it’s interesting how the NBA wants to improve the basketballs. I would have never guessed that scientists were trying to improve the balls, so that the players would play better.I thought the article was good, but should’ve given more info on the experiment.
