7th Grade Science – Weekly Science Article Report #13

February 5th, 2007 · 55 Comments
7th Grade Science

The theme for this weekly science report is “stretching yourselves.”

For this report, I want you to get out of your comfort zone. You can do this in a number of ways. You can:

  1. Read a longer article than usual.
  2. Read a more difficult article than usual.
  3. Read an article about an area you know nothing about.
  4. Any combination of the above.

If you need any help finding an article, you can check with Ms. Martin or myself.

I look forward to seeing how you stretch.

    Chiken eggs as Drug Factoies
    By Christen Browlee

Medicine comes in lots of different packages. A team of scientists from Scootland says yes. They’ve engineered speal chikens that lay eggs with disease treating drugs inside. These eggs come from chikens that have been engineered to produce certin drugs inside their egg Whites.

    Eat out, eat smart
    By Emily Sohn

    I found this article at:
    http://www.croton-harmonschools.org/default.html

This article is about how some restaurant food is high in calories and fat and how some restaurants will be forced to put nutrition facts on their menus.

I was vary surprised to find out that “a BK Double Whopper with Cheese has 990 calories. An Arby’s Broccoli & Cheese Baked Potato has 536 calories. And a medium chocolate malt at Dairy Queen has 760 calories”

All tougher this was weary surprising and rather disturbing

    A New Basketball Gets Slick
By Emily Sohn, Nov. 8, 2006
I found this article at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20061108/Note3.asp

This article was about how some scientists want the NBA to use a new type of basketball made of plastic. It was also about how the new ball won’t be used because some scientists proved the other scientists wrong, because leather stick to your hand better when it’s covered in sweat.

I think she did a good job in describing her main points. I think she did this when she talked about the tests that the scientists were doing to see which ball was better. She also did a good job when she was talking about a group of scientists proving the other group of scientists wrong and saying that the leather ball is better.

There are also some things I think she could have done better. One of those things is that I think that she could have put some more detail into her article. She also could have said a little more about how they actually tested the basketball.

Overall I liked this article and thought it was very good. If I had to give it a grade I would give it an A.

    Hotdawg911 “Space Camera Glitch”

Have you ever heard of the Hubble Space Telescope? You should have! It was one of the best spacecrafts to ever have orbited the Earth. It has been functioning perfectly since 1990; capturing the deepest picture of the universe. That picture revealed disks of gas and dust turning into planets around other stars.
Now, suddenly, the camera inside the telescope that took that picture, and many others, named the ACS, stopped working because of a glitch in the spacecraft. The loss of this camera is going to hurt the astronomical community, because they have to get other cameras to go in place of that one. People are expecting more and more problems like this one, because the Hubble Space Telescope is supposed to work only to 2010.
I think this article was well written and informative. It had many cool pictures and, wasn’t hard to understand at all.

    Chicken eggs as drug factories

Did you know that Chicken eggs can be used as medicine? Scientists have engineered special chickens to lay eggs that have disease treating drugs inside. They made the DNA of the chicken that tells it to make birds and made to make protein drugs.

I think this article was really cool because I never knew any of that stuff and I like eggs. I think it is cool that one day I’ll be tacking my medicine made from chickens.

Price of Next Big Thing in Physics: $6.7 Billion
    By Dennis Overbye
    http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/08/science/

This article is about a 20-mile long machine that will throw an electron at a positron to try to recreate the “Big Bang.” Scientists already have the design for it but it cost 6.7 billion dollars to make.

I liked this article very much. The writer did an excellent job of researching this topic. He explained how the scenists plan to it and what it will accomplish. By doing this they could see what happened to the trillionth of a second. The author interviewed a lot of the scientists who are working on this project. Many of them think that it will be a few years before governments begin to support it. I think that this project can help us understand a lot more about our universe.

    NONSTOP ROBOT

    Information

This article was written by Emily Sohn November 29, 2006 and was found on the website address: http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20061129/Note2.asp.

    Summary

This article talked about how scientist have made a breakthrough in robot building and have created a new robot that would not break down when damaged. In other words you can’t break it (well unless you use a flamethrower or something). This robot had four legs, eight engines and two sensors. This fantastic robot has brought new facts and research on the table which may help scientist create artificial limbs for people who are missing arms and legs and also help us understand how people and animals are able to figure out their own sense of place in space.

    Reflection

I thought this article was very good. It was clear and the length was good. I never read on the subject of “Technology and Engineering,” but it was interesting to try something new. Emily Sohn has outdone herself again! I had a lot of pleasure reading this and it had plenty of pictures.
I did think that the caption explained very much, but besides that I loved it!

Look out Eyeglass injuries may lead to hospital visit

    Written by Holly Wagner.

    http://www.eurekalert.org
This article is about the number of people who received emergency treatment for eye injuries . In 2002 and 2003 27,000 people went to the ER for treatment related to wearing eyeglasses. More then 1000 of these cases were admitted to the hospital. Researchers also found that the injuries vary by age and gender. People 65 or older more likely fall and hit their head. Sport related injuries were more common in children 17 and younger. And injuries to the eyeball were more among people ages 18 and 64.
The researchers defined that the injuries as event in which the glasses were involved and cases in which foreign bodies entered the eye.
The cases were separated in 3 groups:

Laceration or cuts to the face head and eyeball were common in all three groups

children 17 and under- cases that had caused sports and recreation activities

working age adults 18-64 -was the most likely to directy injury the eyeball. Man had a higher percentage
    of eyeball injury.

adults over 65- Most likey Injury to face and head. More common in women the men

90% of eye injury are preventable with better education and use of safty eyeware . For children parents should know that eyeglasses are not able to take the same kind of impact that sports eyewear can.

This article was long and did repeat some thing twice.

  • 15    purplepower94 // Feb 8, 2007 at 9:00 pm

The article that I read is called, “Orbiting Junk, Once a Nuisance, Is Now a Threat” by William J. Broad. It is from The New York Times, published February 6, 2007.

This article is about how garbage floating in space is causing damage by shattering other types of spacecrafts. If this keeps happening, more and more things will be broken and will cause other things to be broken, and could end up breaking expensive and important equipment. Scientists said that they have counted 10,000 detectable items orbited (detectable item is something 4 or more inches wide). China did a test and shot an anti-satellite rocket into space, which smashed into an old satellite causing no less than hundreds of pieces of debris into space. Other countries are afraid that this will make the chain reactions go faster. One scientist says that China didn’t think of the problems that this test could indirectly cause. They said that the same thing was going to happen with the garbage in space all along, but the test would just make it happen faster. People all over are trying to control this problem and find ways to stop it before it causes too much trouble.

I thought this article was very interesting. It highlighted important things and gave good details. One thing that I didn’t like so much about it was that it was very repetitive. The article was longer than the ones I normally read, and it seemed like the same thing was said many times. I think that if the article was shorter with less of the same thing being said, or about the same length with more details it would have been better. The main thing the article was saying was how the debris in space was dangerous and would someday make a huge mess in space. This seemed like it was being said every other paragraph in a slightly different way. Besides that, I thought the article was very good. It wasn’t too dry or boring and it gave a lot of information. There were many small details in it that could have easily been ignored but they weren’t. That was one thing I thought was really good. For the most part was very well written. It wasn’t to confusing even though the topic wasn’t simple.

    Chicken Lays as Drug Factories
    By Christen Brownlee
    http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20070124/Note2.
    Date: Jan. 24, 2007

This article is about how scientists use chicken eggs to put in drugs. They also talk about birds and cows and how they use animal milk to put in drugs too.

I chose this article because it was different. It was ok because it was talking about animals milk go into drugs and it was a little disturbing. But beside that it was ok. I like that they shone pictures and it was spaced out enough, so I could read it.

    Stonehenge Settlement
    By E.Sohn

The article I read is about the mystery of Stonehenge. It was thought to be used for honoring the dead. There are some houses about two miles away from Stonehenge which is believed to be the home’s of the creators of Stonehenge.
I thought it was a very good article because I always love to learn more about mysteries that mankind are not able to discover yet. I like that because you get to make your own theories about the mystery. I thought the author gave plenty of information about the article. I think she could have given more theories for the reader to think about. I think it was still a good article.

    Odor-Chasing Penguins
    By M. Price

This article, Odor-Chasing Penguins, is about a study that was done to prove that penguins have a functional sense of smell. The smell, which smells like rotten eggs, to penguins is the smell of their dinner. This smell means that there are sea creatures to be eaten. The penguins swim along the surface of the water to catch fish and other sea creatures. Penguins build nests where ever they can, and all the nests have walkways to the beach that form penguin highways. A researcher put the rotten egg smell along the penguins highways and he observed their behavior. He thought the penguins would go to these spots in the morning when they were hungry. They did the opposite, they walked by them in the morning and ignored them. In the evening then they were going back to their nests they would stop at the spots and smell them. Researcherd are not sure why they did that, but they hope future research will uncover how penguins use there sense of smell.

I thought the article was going to be more interesting. It was a good article but I thought it was kind of boring. As I was reading the article I thought that researchers had made an interesting discovery about the penguins sense of smell. All that they have found out that they use there sense of smell to help find their food.

This article is about reaserchers in a recent study prove that that reading the news paper on a handheld computeris better for the envirerment than reading the paper version. For their study, the reaserchers focused on the New York Times, wich was more subscribers per 7-day week than any other newspaper in the United States of America. About 1.2 million subscribers get it on the weekends, and 1.7 million get it durring the week.

    Coral Islands Survive a Tsunami

    Report written by Pooky star

I got this article at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com, and it’s written by C. Gramling.

This Article is about how in December 2004, a large, undersea earthquake in the Indian Ocean. The earthquake triggered a tsunami (a large series of, destructive waves that traveled across the ocean in all directions.) The Maldives is, about 1,200 islands southwest of India, were in the tsunami’s path. The islands of the Maldives are made up of coral reefs built on top of the craters of undersea volcanoes. The land is coral and sand, it is just above sea level. Scientists thought that the islands would get damaged, very damaged and that all the land and sand would get wiped out by the giant waves. But when researchers went back to study the sand depths and new shorelines, they found that the islands had survived. The waves carved away parts of the sandy cliffs and beaches on one side of the islands but put sand back on the other coast.

I thought that this article was pretty good, but with some boring parts. I learned that the islands didn’t get as damaged as the scientists thought it would because the tsunami started around there so the waves were a lot less strong compared as when the waves hit the coasts of other places that were farther away. And it was sad to know that 80 died on those islands and some islands flooded and that most of their homes were destroyed.

How a Venus Flytrap Snaps Shut
    by Emily Sohn

This article is about how scientists may have come up with a reason why Venus fly traps can close their leaves on a fly so fast. Mathematician Lakshminarayanan Mahadevan did an experiment. He put flourescent dots on the plant’s leaves, and he took videos of the plant in motion, and measured it’s leaves. The results showed that cells on the leaves get longer, and the cells on the inside of the surface don’t change. Then the leaves want to go inward, but the shape of the leaves won’t let it. Then pressure builds up, and the leaves open for a tenth of a second.

I liked this article because it included a lot of interesting information about the plant, that I never knew. I liked how Emily Sohn explained about Mahadevan’s experiment, and the results of it. I think there should’ve had a graph or chart from the experiment. Overall, it was an interesting article aboutVenus fly traps.

    How Light Bulbs Work
    By Tom Harris
    From HowStuffWorks.com

In the article, How Light Bulbs Work, it explains how light bulbs work (Thus the name). The artile has diagrams and pages of information about how bulbs glow. I honestly have no opinion about the article.
If you would like to spend 15 to 20 minuets reading about bulbs, then this article is for you. If you are like me and couldn’t care less, then I would stick to TEEN PEOPLE magazine.
I thought Harris did a great job of explaining how a light bulb works, but I do think that anyone under the age of 18 would have to short of an attention spand to read it.
If you are really interested in light bulbs then I would highly recomend this article. Otherwise, find something else to read.
