Warmest Year on Record-Emily Sohn-Science News for Kids
    Published Feb 8, 2006

When I read Warmest Year on Record by E. Sohn, my first thought was not that the article was amazing. It wasn’t terrible either.
The article was all about global warming and this year’s hot tempertures.
Although this article was not written amazingly well, it had good facts and probably would be a good resource for the sybject.
I read the article because I am acually pretty interested in this topic, so I do gice the author credit for picking a good subject.
I also liked the title. Although it was not creative, it got straight to the point and told you what the article was all about.
Warmest Year on Record was not the best article but it wasn’t the worst either.

    Polios last stand
    By Cassandra Willyard
    Found at http://www.firstscience.com/home/articles/humans/polio-s-last-stand_6466.html

Most people in 2006, who contracted polio, were poor kids, who play in roads, and dirt. In Nigeria, more than 1000 people got polio in 2006.

Cassandra begins the article by setting the scene, as described above. She then proceeds by talking about how polio is a virus, which enters the body through the mouth, most likely when eating. Also, most people don’t show signs of being sick.
Well, now the u.s.a is practacly free of polio, being eliminated from the U.S.A in the 70’s. Part of the problem is bioligical. Health workers try to immunize all children, giving special attention to communities where outbreaks occur. However, in nigeria, 28% of kids have not recived the vaccine.

Overall, this was a boring article, and very long. Cassandra did not have me interested, and she could have told me a little more.

Family found for giant stinking flower
    (from the Eurek alert reports.)

This plant named raffesiaceae was found 200 years ago in the Sumatran rain forset weighing 15 pounds has found a home in the botanical tree life. The flower was named after the men who discovered it.The plants flower is blood red and stinks of rotting flesh. The plant lives in the rain forest in Southeast Asia.
Researchers worked for decades to find a place for this unusual plant. Using the DNA techniques the molecule makers and matched the plant to family named Euphorbiaceae. There is still more to know about rafflesiaceae. They want to know how it became a giant.

This is a good articial easy to read and understand. With alot of information.

Gone for decades, Jaguars Steal Back to the Southwest 10-17-06

    By Sandra Blakeslee

Article from The New York Times

After reading this article I learned how organizations are working to protect the Jaguar in one or both countries. Recently Jaguars have been spotted in ranges of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. Experts don’t even know how long they have been sneaking back to their breeding grounds in Mexico. Their presence has set off confusions on both sides of the boarder. Conservationists are developing incentives to stop bounty hunters in Mexico from killing the big cats. Jaguars are the largest Native American cat.

I agree that environmentalist should declare parts of Arizona and New Mexico habitat for Jaguars. I believe that Jaguars should not be killed because I don’t think they really are a threat to society. I really enjoyed reading this article!

A Star’s Belt of Dust and Rocks

    ScienceNewsForKids.com

This article is about an asteroid belt formed two AUs from our sun. An Au is the average distance between us and the earth. This belt was formed by two asteroids colliding. It is called the zeta leporis.

This article was not good. It had harly any info. and couldn’t keep me awake! I think there should be some more writters other than Emily Sohn for Science News For Kids.com

    G-Tunes with a Message
    http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com
    By E. Sohn

The article I read is about Gibbons (apes) that communicate with songs. These monkeys live in Southeast Asia calling to each other with songs from tree to tree. Research shows that these monkeys change the order of the notes to share certain messages with other apes. This is called syntax. Its the first evidence of apes using an early step to human like language.

I think this is a very good article because it is really interesting. This is an early human like communication. This is a great advancement for apes. I find it amazing that animal all have their way of communicating. I think that is extremely awesome. Maybe in the future we could be communicating with animals, who knows. I think that the author did a great job explaining all about the research and how they found out, but there is still not enough information on the communication. Over all it was a really good article and I recommend this article to anyone that reads my report.

A Star’s Belt of Dust and Rocks

    Information

This article was written by Emily Sohn on January 10, 2007 and was found on the website address http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20070110/Note2.asp.

    Summary

This article was about how researchers have found that a star called Zeta Leporis has a bunch of rocks and dust around. Possibly by one big or many collisions of asteroids.

    Reflection

I thought this was a terrible article. I disliked every part of it. I was very happy when I reached the end. It was confusing both in text contents and vocabulary and it was dreadfully boring, I am truly surprised that suck a talented writer like Emily Sohn would write such a horrible article. Kids are will not be able to understand this one.

    HotDawg911 “G-Tunes with a Message”

This article is very cool and interesting (to me). It is so for a whole bunch of reasons. First of all, the topic it self is very intriguing, talking about how small apes called white-handed gibbons make music using a variety of notes. This process is called syntax and it puts apes a step closer to the human language. The gibbons use these songs in order to communicate and warn each other, and often perform in duets. It is not as complicated as the way humans use syntax. We arrange words in different ways to convey meaning
In conclusion this article was very informative and fun to read. It dragged on in a couple of places, but besides that, it is a nice and easy.

    Museum Madness!
    December 15, 2006
    Times For Kids

This article is about a movie and Larry the character and he works in a museum and the comes to life. Larry is also trying to impress his son that he has a cool job but you’ll have to find out if his son thinks it is cool or not … .

I like this article a lot because now I wont to see it and I like to watch movies too. Another reason is that all of the animals come to life and the monkey is always taking Larry keys to lock up everything and it is really funny because he gets a little wet too (lol). Another reason is that it seams rely funny too.

The article I read is called “Fingerprint Evidence” by Emily Sohn. Dated May 3, 2006. It is from Science News for Kids. (sciencenewsforkids.org)

This article is about how fingerprints are useful for solving crimes, but can also be misleading. It also tells about the different types of technologies that are used to identify fingerprints. At the beginning of this article, it says how a man was framed because his fingerprints appeared to match the ones at a crime scene. Fingerprints can be changed depending on the condition of them at the scene (wet, damaged etc.) and the way the person is fingerprinted, (How hard they press etc.) so it is not necessarily always accurate. Scientists are trying to create improved fingerprinting technology to prevent this from happening. The article also says how current programs are very difficult to write and use because of how you need to search to find fingerprint matches. At the end of the article, you find out about the many uses that fingerprints have aside from solving crimes, and why they are extremely helpful.

I thought this article was really well written. Like most of Emily Sohn’s articles, it was organized so it was easy enough to process and take in. The topic of the article was very interesting because it was had a lot to do with science but it was a different kind then what you sit in a classroom learning which makes it pretty cool. I also liked how the length of the article was balanced. There was not too much information jammed into each section and it wasn’t too short or too long. I thought that was good because when an article is too short usually it doesn’t have a lot of information or there aren’t many details and when an article is too long it usually can get boring. Another thing that I liked was how the article gave examples. Instead of telling about a topic and then moving on it gave real life examples, like at the end where all the ways that fingerprinting could be used elsewhere. It was much better than if it had just said, “Fingerprint scans aren’t just for solving crimes.” and left it at that. Overall, the writer did a very good job with this article.

    Plastic Meals for Seals

    Report written by Pooky star

I got this article from http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com and it is written by E. Sohn.

This article explains that al the litter in the oceans: fishing nets, cans and bottles, and other pieces of plastic can get eaten or stuck on or in the seal. The seals don’t eat the plastic on purpose; the fish that they eat swallowed the plastic in the water. Discarded netting is not the only hazard that seals face. Bite-size pieces of plastic from ocean-battered containers such as milk jugs can end up in seal stomachs. This is a sentence from the article.

I liked this article because shows that humans are polluting other living creatures’ habitats, dropping stuff in the ocean not thinking about what happens to the living animals and plants when they interact. Things are happening, and they’re not that good either, those bad things will keep coming and will attack us we have to change things.

    G-Tunes With a Message
    by
    E. Sohn

The article is about gibbons, which are small apes, and how they communicate with one another by singing. Researchers from the Unitverstiy of St. Andrews in Scotland studied 13 groups of gibbons. Gibbons are known for their loud sounds. Their sounds can be heard throughtout the rainforest. Males and females mate for life. the males and females perform duets. As they perform together their tunes sometimes change over time.
When the gibbons sees predators they begin to sing. They have a sound for almost everything in different notes. The gibbons react to each song when they hear it. When they hear the predator song they wait for at least two minutes before calling back. Gibbons uses syntax by putting notes into different patterns and gives their songs meaning. Humans use syntax to help us arrange words into sentences.
I like this article because I love animals. The article is easy to understand and gives good details. It is really interesting how these animals communicate through song. We sing just to sing but when gibbons sing it means something. It is a very interesting article.

    Stalking plants By Sent
    By Carolyn Gramling

dodder is a wiry,Orange vine that steals water and nutriensfrom other plants. vines choese their victoms by smell, growing its shoots in the direction of a plant’s natural perfume. A seedling of a vine known as dodder attaches to a tomato plant. Did you know whene a Dodder sprouts, it doesent grow root to seek its own food. Instead, it grows a shoot that reaches out to other plants. A Dodder tangle steals food from a glasswort plant. A tendril of a young dodder plant stretches out to entwine a tomato seedling. I lioked this artical because it has a lot of information and I learned a lot about that plant.

Smiles Turn Away Colds by Emily Sohn
I found this article at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20061220/Note2.asp

This article was about how people that are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to get colds. It was also about how studies show that when you are happy your body has the energy to fight off the cold.

I think Emily Sohn did a good job in describing some of her main points. I think she did this when she talked about how scientists are studying about scientists performing studies on people, although she did not include much detail.

Overall I did not like this article. I don’t think that she explained things very well and I think she could have explained most things much better. She did not really say that much about the procedure that scientists are doing to prove/disprove the theory that being happy is good for you. I think she could have said a lot more about how how being happy keeps you healthy.

I did not like this article and I would not recommend it. I would give it a C.

    (I can’t find the author’s name)

This article is about climate change and how President Bush is dealing with it. It talked about the state of the union address he is going to make and what he intends to do.

I liked this article a lot, it was very well written. The article had a lot of facts and it had some interviews. That’s what makes it better than anything from Science News for Kids. The author actually interviewed people and researched the topic. The article had a lot of interesting facts like, the U.S.C.A.P. (US Climate Action Partnership) plans to cut greenhouse gasses by 2050 by 60%. That will only happen if the President approves it. The article also interviewed people like the executives of U.S.C.A.P. and the white house press secretary Tony Snow. I found it interesting that President Bush has rejected mandatory controls on greenhouse gasses in the past.

This article is about how african penguins can smell foods from really far away and still locate them exactly. They only do this in the evening when it’s time to feed their young.

I found this article to be slightly entertaining. But it had some pretty dull info.

    Copycat Monkeys
    By Emily Sohn
This article is about how baby macaques (a kind of monkey) try to copycat what humans do. Scientists tested twenty-one baby macaques five times for the first thirty days of their lives. The experimenter held the baby macaques up, and made different facial expressions, to see if the monkey would imitate them. Some monkeys copied the expressions, but some didn’t do that well.
I liked this article because it explained about the behavior of the monkeys, and how they reacted toward the experiment. I think the article should have showed a graph or diagram showing the results of the experiment.
