This article can be found at http://science.howstuffworks.com/sidewinder2.htm
    Heat Seekers
Retell: This article is about ‘smart’ missiles, which are missiles that are fired, and then instead of making a straight bee-line and having a large chance of missing their target, these missiles will find the target on their own, practically with a mind. It will seek out the heat of the targeted aircraft, mostly from the plane’s exhaust. The missile can see in-fa-red, which gives it a very good idea of where the target is. The missile is guided by a small fuel sore, and when that is used up, the missile will glide towards it’s target.
Response: This article was very precise in telling the reader exactly how these missiles work. It is amazing that the missiles can lock onto the targets so well, and stay on target the whole time through. It seems to me though, that if the missile ran out of fuel and began to slow down, it may lock onto the heat source of the plane that fired it, which could lead to it backfiring heavily. I still think that technology is advancing so fast we will eventually outdate ourselves, and robots may become dangerous. For example, plans for a space station that fires lasers at enemy bases will be guided by a computer, which could easily develop a glitch and fire down upon others as well. I think that war machines are amazing and horrifying at the same time. They kill, designed to eliminate another human being in various horrible ways. It is truly amazing what lengths people will go through with to make others o their own kind suffer.

This is for 101kid.com’s article. Could you please be much more specific? I have no idea what you are talking about, or what your article is about. The link to your article did not work, so I have to rely upon you to tell me what it was about, and you were very unhelpful in telling me. Please include a lot more detail in your next one. And you may want to use spell check.

this comment is for 101kid.com–Your article was way to short, buster. Next time try explaining the article a little bit more. Or maybe you could’ve shared with us what you thought about the article. Did you agree with the authors on some things? Did you like the way they wrote it? Articles don’t always have juicy facts, but we would still like to hear about the articles.

  • 5    White Ivy // Dec 12, 2006 at 7:31 pm

This comment is for maniacleprechaun–Your article was really interesting. Do the smart missiles ever miss it’s target? I fully agree with your response, especially the last couple of sentences. Why do people think so much about destroying others of our own species? And even others outside our species? Well done!

“Snowy Silence is no White Lie”, by Kathy Wollard. My father cut it out from the newspaper and gave it to me to read, so it is what I’m going to do my article on!
This article talks all about why sounds seem to be muffled after a lot of snow falls. Haven’t you ever noticed that after a snow storm or even a light snow fall, the sound of a dog barking might seem more quiet than usual? The cause of this depends on how the snowflakes fall. All flakes are different, so they don’t all piece together when they land on top of eachother. They pile up loosly with spaces in between. When you hear a noise, usually the sound waves will bounce right off the ground and reflect as a normal sound. But when there is snow on the ground, the sound waves will be absorbed into the snow, and so will waves travelling parallel. This happens when the waves are pushed into the spaces in the snow by friction. The sound waves then lose more energy as they continue over the snow, and this is what causes the noises to sound distant once they reach our ears. Once the snow is trampled on, rained on, or it just melts, the spaces will dissapear and the sound waves will not pass through the snow.
When my dad first gave me this article I thought it would be another boring article that I wouldn’t care about. But when I read it, it actually turned out to be very interesting because most of us are expecting and hoping for snow to come soon. I guess I never really noticed before how quiet it got after it snowed. But I suppose that after you realize and learn about why it is more quiet, it is actually very beautiful.

  • 7    ManiacLeprechaun // Dec 13, 2006 at 11:20 am

Coolios! yayayayayyayayyayaya. That was really good. I always thought that snow made everything quieter, but I never knew why, and I never thought I would know until doomsday! You have put my soul at rest. But seriously though, it was very well done. You gave a lot of detail on the article, and you sure made everything clear. Very good! yayayayyayayayayayyayaya Happy!

    Weekly Science Report

Article Name: NASA Plans Inhabited Moon Base by 2020
    Author: Catherine Elsworth
Where it can be found: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/12/05/unasa105.xml

This article is about how NASA plans to build a permanent base on the moon and have people living there by 2020. The last time that people set foot on the moon was in 1972 with the last Apollo mission. NASA wants to have astronauts living on the base for at first one week and then eventually they want to have them there for six weeks. By 2024 they hope to have a permanent staff for the base. The astronauts will conduct research and ‘live off’ the land. They will also be planning missions to Mars. Crews with vehicles will be able to explore the moon and go on missions to build living quarters that have their own power supplies.
I found this article very interesting. This week I had seen articles about NASA’S plans to build a moon base, but all the other articles I read were too long to read and then have to summarize. I found this article to be just the right length with a good amount of information. I think it is so amazing that NASA is going to be able to build a base on the moon. The only time I had ever heard of anyone living in space was on the Disney Channel Movie: Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century. I cannot believe that so soon astronauts will be able to live on the moon. I’ll be about 27 when astronauts start to live there. I think that having a base on the moon will lead to us being able to travel farther, enabling us to go to planets much farther away from our own. It is completely amazing. I cannot wait to hear more about the base, like where they’re going to put it and what it is going to be made out of.
My only complaint about this article is the typos that I found. Other than that it’s well written and I like how the author used a book that was written about living on the moon in the 1950s to rope you into the article.

  • 10    ManiacLeprechaun // Dec 13, 2006 at 10:04 pm

    This is for DARLiNGPiNK!’s article
That is so cool. I always thought that someday we would live on the moon, but I never thought it would be so soon! I would never want to live up there though. So quite and barren, and there might be a big risk of living there. But, think about it. Would living there be safer then living here on earth? There are no people with guns, no car accidents, no storms, you would have plenty of food, there would be no war. But, there would be the constant chance of something going wrong with the air supply. It also seems like there wouldn’t be any disease up there if they manage to keep it sterile. Wow do I blather on. Bottom line, well done! :)

This article is called ‘Internet Generation’ bye Emily Sohn, and i chose it because i am on the computer alot and wanted to see what it was about.
90 percent on US kids between the ages 12 to 17 use the internet, half of them use it every day. Scientists have started to wonder if the internet is good for the kids or bad? It is dangerous because people give more information then they should. But scientists say that the internet is nor good or bad. Parents start to worry when their kids go in chat rooms and get sucked into telling dangerous information. To help stop that situation, in 2000, the U.S. Congress passed the Children’s Internet Protection Act, which requires schools and libraries to block offensive and obscene Web sites. People think using the internat is easy but it is more complex then anyone would have thought. People interviewed kids to ask them what they thought the internet was, some thought it was an icon, and others thought it was in the computer itself. wasn’t until age 10 or 11 that kids realized that the Internet is a network of millions of computers. It took another 2 or 3 years for them to understand, for example, that a stranger could see what they’d posted.
I thought that is was an interesting topic because i never really thought how it was dangerous to people. I got this article from http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org.

  • 13    White Ivy // Dec 14, 2006 at 5:58 pm

This comment is for DARLiNGPiNK! Wowee wow wow! It’s really amazing that man will soon be living on the moon! There’s so many questions I have about living there. Like, how will they get food? Water? Do their bathroom business? Cause if they just do all that on the rocket, it doesn’t really count. But anyway, your summary was way cool and you I can tell that you really read the article thouroughly. Great job!

  • 14    Gia Beth // Dec 14, 2006 at 6:55 pm

The article I read was called “Back to the Moon” written by Emily Sohn. I got it at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20061213/note2.asp

“Back to the Moon” is about the base NASA plans to build on the moon. The building should begin in 2020 and end in 2024.

I think it’s really cool that they are planning on building a building on the moon. “Someday, you might be able to live on the moon.” I, personally, would LOVE to live on the moon.
I think the author did a good job talking about the plans for the base on the moon. I think so because there is a lot of information about when they plan to start working on the building and where they are thinking about putting it. It’s not “yet decided where on the moon to put the base” and they might not decide until 2013 but for now they are thinking about “an area called Shackelton crater.” It said that the base on the moon could “become a training site and launching base for future missions to Mars.” It would be great if they could learn more about the outer space and, even better, learn about possible past life on Mars all from the base on the moon.

    Weekly article
I just read the article called “Dribble Quibble: Experiments find that new basketball gets slick.” The article is written by Peter Weiss, and I found it by searching on google.com. The article was about the new National Basketball Association (NBA) basketball that is going to be used in this years season, it is made of Plastic, as apposed to the leather balls used in the past 35 years. The ball has much better grip than the previous balls when it is dry, but even when just a drop of liquid gets on it, it becomes very hard to handle. The leather balls absorb water 8 times faster also.
I liked this article very much, especially because I’m into basketball, and like to watch it on T.V. It was very interesting how the new basketball has errors in it that could turn a game around. The article had a lot of facts in it which was good, but I didn’t like that the article got confusing at points. (obviously I didn’t like that it was confusing, I don’t think I need to point that out, but I’ll keep it in anyway because it makes it look like mi weekly article report is longer!) I also liked how they showed pictures of the new ball and shows how they tested to see how durably the ball actually is.

You can find the article at http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/20061104/fob4.asp

    Title - Deep Impact
    Article by - Neil Shea
    Found in - National Geographic

The article that I chose is about how scientists from NASA aimed to punch a hole right into a comet. On July 4, this is what they tried to do. If they were lucky, tons of information locked away about the solar system would be revealed. Investigators hoped to reach their goal by blasting apart Tempel 1. (Tempel 1 is a comet nine miles long.) By blasting it to pieces, the scientists exposed its basic anatomy. Comets are mysterious figures, made up of rock, ice, and dust. 4.5 billion years ago they were formed. A lot of scientists believe that comets brought earth most of its water and all the organics needed to create life. Michael A’ Hearn the projects principal investigator says, “that the shape, size and depth of the impact crater will reveal the comets structure.” Engineers designed 2 vehicles for their mission. A flyby space craft, (that has cameras, telescopes, a spectrometer, and an 820 pound impact craft (about the size of a washer machine.) The flyby craft was launched in January, carrying the impactor to Tempel 1, 83 million miles from earth. About 500,000 miles from tempel 1, it will release the impactor, and steer itself into the comet causing a collision between tempel 1 and itself.
It think that the article I chose was very interesting. I always thought of comets as these giant shooting star type things. I never knew scientists didn’t know this much about the solar system and space. This article taught me about comets and what we might be able to find out from this mission. If the scientists, engineers and whoever else working on this project, prevails, and finds more information about the strange and mysterious solar system ,I think it will be a great discovery. I hope that another article about this is printed pout in the national geographic explaining the out come if the mission.

    Back To the Moon
    December 13 2006
    Emily Sohn

This article is about NASA’s plan to build a base on the moon by 2024 . This base will revolutionize the way of landing on the moon this will take lots of time to make and develop but it will be totally worth it. This “lunar space base” will help scientifically and
economically because we will be able discover more things on the moon and it will be an easier way to get from planet to planet.
This article caught my attention because I’ve always been interested in space and technology because it makes scientists more aware about space and its qualitys. This is also very interesting and I thought this wouldn’t be successful for a long time. This is what a lot of people now think of the“future”. If I were an astronaut I would want to live there for my whole life to discover new things in space.

  • 24    lola // Dec 14, 2006 at 7:53 pm

this comment is for rorofosho. Your article sounds really cool. It seems really interesting that NBA would change the type of basketball the players use. My only question is why they switched basketballs when water can make it hard for the players to handle. I mean, wouldn’t their sweat or water from their water bottles do something? Over all, good job!

The article I chose is called, “To Catch a Dragonfly,” by Emily Sohn. It can be found at the site: http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20061213/Feature1.asp.

In the article, Emily tells the reader a lot about dragonflies. She says in the article, “Although dragonflies have been around for a long time and live in many parts of the world, scientists still know remarkably little about them.” To me that means dragonflies must be very hard to catch and study because if they’ve been around so long, why haven’t scientists figured them out yet? What scientists have found out is that dragonflies migrate to warmer places when winter comes around; much like birds. To make sure that this is true, a group of scientists placed radio transmitters onto separate dragonflies. After 12 days of observing the dragonflies that were being tracked, the researchers were then sure that dragonflies indeed migrate.

I liked this article a lot. When I first saw the introduction of the article, I thought it was going to be boring, but a bright picture of a dragonfly drew me in. When I finally read the article, I got more interested, because I was learning something new in a more exciting way. There were colorful pictures throughout the article that were very detailed and made me want to read more. I think that this article was perfect and I don’t have any critiques to say.

    China: River Dolphin Declared Extinct
    the associated press.
    Article found: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/12/14/world/asia/14briefs-extinctdolphin.html?_r=1&ref=science&oref=slogin

This article is about how a Chinese species of dolphin, the baiji was declared extinct. The reason it has died off is because of pollution to their habitat. This is a 20 million year old species.

I think its sad that all these species are becoming extinct because of human interactions. You keep on hearing about a species dying out because they were hunted too much or their habitat was ruined. It stinks.

  • 29    EarthChild // Dec 14, 2006 at 11:50 pm

Article: Scientists Marvel at Deep Sea Discoveries
    Author: Randolph E. Schmid, AP

In Washington DC scientists discovered a new species of shrimp that were beleived to be extinct 50m illion years ago dwellling on an underwater peak beneath the serface of the Coral Sea.
Researchers conducted 19 ocean experiments this year. They operated 128 near shore scampling sites and tagged animals such as squid and seloins to find out how thwe live their lives

Reflection: This article was hard to read for me, it gave too many facts, and as a resultI couldn’t copy down much. It was just all info on a page.
This person should write more than just their notes.

    Mysterious dark energy

Mysterious dark energy has existed for most of time, scientists say. By Richard A. Lovett. It is about a mysterious energy in space. There were different types of energies in space that NASA found.
What I don’t like about the article is that it is really boring and all it talks about is the university that found it. And it should have an activity on how to make gas.
What I like about the article is that it had a lot of good facts about space. And it tells you about what the gas is and how NASA thinks it got there

    Weekly Science REPORT

The article I read was called Earth Friendly Fabrics, by Emily Sohn. It is from http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com. It was written on Dec 20, 20006. The article was about how scientists are trying to create a new way to make clothes that is healthy for the environment. They use recycled waste that would usually get thrown away and make the cloths with them. To replace cotton because it said that cotton has many bad chemicals in it that harms the environment. It also said that they are experimenting on using chicken feathers for clothes and it would be a substation of wool. Right now the organic materials they use in clothes are coconut, bamboo, and corn sugar.
I kind of got grossed out when I read that they are using chicken feathers to make clothes. I wonder if they kill the chickens first or they just let them walk around bald. But it is good now that everyone is trying to help make everything environment safe and help protect the earth. This article was very hard to understand because there were a lot of terms that I didn’t know. It also was a very boring article.

The government and scientists are working on a satellite that will orbit the earth to shoot a high powered laser to destroy any incoming nuclear missles. They are also working on a 5th branch of military called Space Force. It’ll follow the Air Force.
I think this a brilliant idea of utilizing another source of power and transportation but should not only be used for war. It should be used for research, emergency asteroid destruction and helping other people. This idea when created should not be made absent mindedly. If it is it will definetly fail. This will probably take years at a time to make tiny adjustments to the program. I personnaly hope this works but i hope this wont happen in my life time because it wont work.

This article is about a robot that can creat copys of itself. It does this by putting together parts to create another one of itself. Robots with this technology could eventually do great things, but i think we are outdating ouselves and one day it could seriously come back and destroy us. I dont mean like the robots take over the world scheme, but more like we destroy all natural resources and have to depend soley on robots. That is my biggest fear. I like reading about these things because i find it interesting how fast we are moving compared to the last 40 billion years. With dinosaurs for billions of years nothing changed in the enviroment except the dinosaurs themselves. They didn’t effect the enviroment but one day the enviroment effected them. We should learn to depend soley on nature rather technology.

This article was about how milk and meat from cloned animals was completely safe to eat. This was vital information but also cause an up rage in the community for humanity towards animals and people. I find this kind of unnatural and personally would not eat it. For people in Africa and other 3rd world countries who are starving, this could really help them and increase the world’s food supply. I feel that this extra resource of food wont be used for this. We will be selfish and develop another faster food and abuse the purpose of the cloning food. I am glad that we are making improvements in the world of cloning but i hope it will be used for the right purposes.

This article is about how America is trying to make more enviromentally friendly clothes and materials. This includes clothes made from bamboo pulp and yarn made from chciken feathers. These clothes feel just as good if not better than clothes we have today. I find this a brilliant idea because we are utulizing waste material to create things that are vital to people. I still think that we should be focusing on other feul supplies, but this still is a great step in repairing our ecosystem.
