Decoding odors
B Mary Tucker
Found at http://www.firstscience.com/home/articles/humans/decoding-odors_1740.html
In this article, Mary talks about how scientists are figuring out how we decode smells. Atoms make molecules, which is what we smell. We still don’t know how our noses read molecules, despite knowing a lot more about them. The prevailing theory is the shape or steric theory of odor. This means, that a rose smells like a rose, because the molecules in it are shaped to smell like it. The thing that nullifies this theory, is the fact that some same shaped smells smell differently. The vibrational theory, says that the general mechanism of anesthesia, is like a scientific sword in the stone. It states that molecules in every substance, generates a different vibration that gets interpreted as a smell via a form of electrical tunneling in our noses.
This is a very nicely done article. Ms. Tucker, writes a long, but good article.

Back to the Moon by Emily Sohn December 13, 2006
I found this article at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/1213/Note2.asp
In this article Emily Sohn talked about how NASA is planning to build a space base on the moon. They are going to start in 2020 and most likely end in 2024. It was also about how in 2014 NASA will send astronauts to the moon in a new kind of shuttle.
I thought she did a good job in explaining her main points. I thought she did this when she said how you might be one of the first people to visit the space outpost, because if we are ten now we will only be 28 when the base on the moon comes out. I think she also did a good job in explaining one of her main points when she said how astronauts will be only able to spend a week at a time on the moon, but then it will be six months.
I thought she could have said more a about the space mission in 2014, and also about the new type of shuttle that NASA will build. I think she could have said a lot more about how humans and robots will work together on the moon. She also could have said more about the space expedition to mars.
Overall I thought this was a pretty good article. I would give it 90%, A-

To catch a Dragonfly
Science news for kids 12/12/06
By Emily Sohn
I really enjoyed reading this article because I learned that there are about 5,700 known species of dragonflies in the world, as many as 50 species fly to warmer places for the winter, just like migrating birds do. I never knew that so many dragonflies existed. I also learned that Crayfish eat dragonflies, but some dragonflies depend on crayfish burrows for shelter during the winter. Scientists are finding similar interactions among other creatures, including alligators and fish in Florida.
I hope to Continue reading more information on dragonflies.

Plastic Meals for Seals
Emily Sohn
Science News for Kids
This article is about how littering in the ocean can effect the seals. It says that they can get tangled in it and swallow it.
I didn’t like this article very much. The article was very short and had very little facts. It tried to explain how littering in the ocean is bad. It said how the fish eat pieces of plastic and then the seals eat them. It didn’t really have much of an angle more than don’t litter, which I already knew. I would like to see more facts and a better angle.

Hotdawg911 “India losing 7,000 Urban Girls Daily”
This article is about how most Indians prefer boys instead of girls for children. It also talks about how girls that are being born get neglected and disliked. This is so because boys/men can support the family better, get more money, and find better jobs (from the parents point of view). Also, parents don’t want girls because, according to their traditions, they should have a man to carry out the family name, and because when women get married, their husbands get to, in India, ask for dowries or money to start the family (it is usually a big amount). Because of this, the girl to boy ratio in some parts of India is 798 girls for every 1,000 boys under the age of six. Parents are also using sex tests to determine the sex of their baby. This has led to the ban of these tests, unless they are for medical use.
This was a short but good article. It is a very quick read for anyone who’s interested. But I don’t agree with it. Why? Because I’m also Indian, and my mom’s told me stories before and I have seen many Indian movies, and not all that I read in this article, I believe. First things first, some of the stuff that I read, are true. Parents like boys, and it is cheaper for them to have boys, but from what I know, I don’t think parents dislike girls enough to neglect them. I don’t even think people ask or pay dowries anymore. In fact, I have a little sister myself, and I don’t think she’s getting neglected (she’s practically spoiled!)! But I haven’t been in India for a while, so I might not be right.
So overall, this was a good article and a nice and easy read.

PLAINS INDIANS
Kids discover
By: Lois Markham
In the people of the plains there were the nomadic tribes and the sedentary tribes. The war things in the tribes are really cool. Like if you had a black and white feather it would mean you wounded or killed an enemy. The black and white with a red dote mean you killed an enemy. A black and white father with the top cut of means you slit an enemy’s throat. A red father means that you were hurt in combat. Two black and whit fathers means you were hurt severally times in combat.

THE FROG FINDER
By Rory Callinan/Brisbane
From Time For Kids
December 8, 2006
This article is about a person who is an Australian zoologist and he thinks he has found several new species of frogs. He also got bit by the frog and the frog is big and lumpy.
I liked this article a little because it has picture of the frog. Another reason is that it is spaced out and the font is clear too. But what I did not like was that it was boring and I am not that interested in frogs. It had no bold letters and it had nothing under lined at all. But this story was inspiring!

Roll up computer monitors to go
Report written by Pooky star
I got this article at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com and it is written by S. McDonagh.
How the companies Philips and E Ink are making a new type of electronic paper that shows words and pictures, just like a computer monitor. It’s just like a piece of paper. You can roll it up, fold it, or bend it. You can drop it and it won’t break. The scientists who made the electronic paper say that their version is the thinnest, most flexible yet. Other versions of electronic paper were made with a thin sheet of glass, which was fragile and rigid.
I think that is really cool! It would be awesome to roll it up and put it in your pocket and take it any where you would want to. I wish I had one. That was a good article.

Grade slipping? Check for snoring
by: Emily Sohn
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org
This article is about kids who snore have a better chance of getting bad grades. The article first talked about a disorder called intermittent hopoxia with is caused by low levels of oxygen in the blood. People who tend to have this disorder also snore. But the second study showed that some kids who have the disorder don’t all get bad grades. So snoring might just keep kids from not sleeping well.Which can cause the bad grades. You could sometimes have your tonsils remove. This was a good article but, it did not have alot of information.

Protecting Cow-and People-From a Deadly Disease
by
S. McDonagh
Jan. 14, 2004
This article, Protecting Cows-and People-From A Deadly Disease, is about mad cow disease. Mad cow disease is found in beef. It gets its name because when cows get this disease it acts weird. It hard for the cows to stand up straight and walk. This disease messes up the cows nervous system. Deformed proteins called prions get into the cows brain and nerves and makes the tissue turn into a sponge. Humans can only get this fatal disease when they eat the meat from an infected cow. Cows would get the disease from eating food that was made from the remains of dead cows that had the disease. The stopped making food this way in 1997 realized that this is how the cows were getting and spreading the mad cow disease in the United States. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is making sure that this disease does not spread again so they are tracking each cow from when it is born until it is in the grocery store.
I thought this was an interesting article. It really made me understand why so people become vegetarians. It kind of grossed me out when I was reading this article. I am glad that they are taking extra precautions to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

Natures Alphabet – By Emily Sohn – November sixteenth two thousand-five
Natures Alphabet is an article in Science News for kids about how some things in nature form or resemble letters and numbers.
The article told about one man who decided to go on a quest looking for these letters and numbers.
The article was pretty cool. I liked the topic. It doesn’t seem like your usual science article topic, but it was pretty interesting.
I also loved the pictures. They showed the mans collection of numbers and letters made from butterflies. The pictures really helped me understand exactly what this man was doing and what he was looking for.
The article also had good headings, which really the gave the article a define beginning middle and end.
The article was not boring at all. Instead of looking at the mans hobbie as a crazy interest, Sohn looked at it as art and science.

“Back to the Moon” by Emily Sohn
This article was found @ http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20061213/Note2.asp
Published on 12/13/2006
This article is about how in 2024, we could all live on the moon! Astronauts have surveyed around 1,000 scientists to come up with a settlement area, if it’s okay idea, and how to manage the “maiden voyage”. They plan to settle in a crater named “Shackelton Crater”, because it has a trench nearby that may contain ice and water. At first, the astronauts would spend about a week at a time on the moon, then half a year, until the project were finished. If you were around four-teen, you could start to train to be an astronaut; you could be one of the first to witness it happen at 30!
I had thought Emily Sohn had been writing a lot more interesting and informative articles. But I still think she needs to work on writing some longer, more thoughtfully researched articles. But other than that she should keep up the good work.

Earliest Flying Mammal Discovered
No Author Listed
Published 12/13/06
Summary: This article is about how a new discovery shows that flying mammals existed at least 70 million years earlier than scientists had thought. This discovery occurred due to the uncovering of a fossil in China. This fossil showed the bones of Volaticotherium Antiquus, an animal that is said to have “belonged to a now extinct ancestral line not related to modern day flying mammals.” The rock beds the fossil was found in “date to at least 125 million years ago in the Mesozoic Era, a time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.” Volaticotherium Antiquus is believed to have been “tree-dwelling, nocturnal and, because of its sharp teeth, most likely feasted on a diet of insects.” The new discovery makes Volaticotherium Antiquus believed to be the earliest known flying mammal. Dr. Jin Meng said that he believed Volaticotherium Antiquus could have lived between 130 and 165 million years ago. The earliest known flying bird, Archaeopteryx, is dated to have lived about 150 million years ago. This could mean that mammals were the first animals to flirt with “air travel” rather then birds.
Reflection: This discovery is really amazing. I hope this discovery can lead to many more discoveries about that time period. I hope they pay close attention to the mammal and really consider all aspects of the discovery. I believe that it is very cool that these scientists could try and challenge a previous hypothesis and try and go deeper. This also proves that all results scientific discoveries are not set in stone, and that the scientific community has to be open to change. I also love how the article describes how they found out how old Volaticotherium Antiquus was. The way they found out kind of reminds me of a detective: how they have to find all of the clues to prove their hypothesis or idea. Overall, this article was well written and informative. It was a little bit more challenging then the Science News For Kids articles, and was a little longer too.

The article I read is called “Why Giggles Make us Smile” by Nikhil Swaminathan. It is from Scientific America, December 13, 2006.
This article is mainly about people’s emotions and how people react to certain sounds. The article begins by telling how people’s brains react to non spoken sounds, mainly cheery or positive ones, and how they have an impact on us. Scientists conducted an experiment that tested people brain activity when they listened to certain sounds. The sounds were connected to the emotions, triumph, disgust, amusement and fear. The parts of the brain that were activated when listening to these sounds, would actually be the parts that would cause a person to make a face or a sound. For example, the scientists said that when someone hears or sees laughter, they want to laugh as well, because that part of there brain is activated.
I really did not like this article. There are many things that I would change about it if I could. I thought that it was too short and did not explain everything well enough. It was very hard to write a summary on because there was not much general information that is usually put in a summary, and most of it was complexly worded and difficult to take in and understand. Going back to the length, I definitely would have made it longer. It was only four paragraphs, and the paragraphs weren’t well organized at all. Tons of information was jammed into each paragraph, which resulted in there not being good explanations, and it being confusing. I would definitely change the way the article was organized, with more explanations and less jammed into one place. This article was very confusing, and a lot didn’t make any sense to me at all. Like I said before, things should have been better explained. I chose this article because it looked interesting, by the title at least. I was disappointed when I read it, because I think, handled differently, it could have been very interesting and well written. Another thing I didn’t like was that it was pretty dull. It didn’t have much inspiration, like the title made it sound. I would suggest putting more in about the laughter and smile area, and less about the parts of the brain that are effected, because that was pretty boring. If it jumped right into what the title suggested it would be much better. I don’t really recommend this article.

A New Basketball Gets Slick
http://www.scienenewsforkids.org
E. Sohn
The article I read is about a new basketball made by Spalding. This new basket ball is made of plastic. This ball is used in the NBA. When this ball is dry you get more of a grip than the leather balls, but when it is wet from sweat it can become very slippery. When the leather is dry it is does not have as much grip as the plastic ball, but when it is wet is has more grip.
I think that this was a good article to read because it shows you that people are trying to figure out a way to help people in the world. I really like learning about modern day technology because a bunch of cool stuff that helps people. I think the author could have put some more information on the new basket ball.

This article is about how cell phones seem to kill brain cells in rats.
I liked this article but what I did not like about it was that it said that It kills brain cells in rats and they don’t know about humans. I also thought it was sad that they tested on the rats and pretty much all the rats died. But I read this article because it sounded like using your cell phone to much and for to long it could kill you but it can’t at least that’s what the Swedish scientist thinks. They said they are doing more test.

G-Tunes with a Message
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com
By E. Sohn
The article I read is about Gibbons (apes) that communicate with songs. These monkeys live in Southeast Asia calling to each other with songs from tree to tree. Research shows that these monkeys change the order of the notes to share certain messages with other apes. This is called syntax. Its the first evidence of apes using an early step to human like language.
I think this is a very good article because it is really interesting. This is an early human like communication. This is a great advancement for apes. I find it amazing that animal all have their way of communicating. I think that is extremely awesome. Maybe in the future we could be communicating with animals, who knows. I think that the author did a great job explaining all about the research and how they found out, but there is still not enough information on the communication. Over all it was a really good article and I recommend this article to anyone that reads my report.

“How to Slice a Cake Fairly” by Emily Sohn
This article is about how mathemeticians are discovering how to divide a cake in two, so that both people are happy with their piece. One way to do this is the “I cut, You choose” method. but that doesn’t exactly seem fair. The two people might think their value of the cake is bigger or smaller than the other person’s value. One way that works is if you tell someone where to divide the cake in two. If they pick the same spot, then divide it there. But is the two spots are different, then you get the piece to the left or the right of their piece. With the piece of cake left over, you would split that equally also.
I like this article because it focuses on a topic that happens to everyone eventually. It was a practical topic, but I don’t think you would need to pay that much detail to cutting two pieces of cake. I think the author could have explained and expanded more about the different mathematical ways to divide the cake. It would have been easier to understand if the author used equations or diagrams to explain her thinking.

“Smiles Turn Around Colds” by Emily Sohn.
This article is about how being happy and relaxed can help prevent colds. Scientists did an experiment by giving 334 healthy adults colds. The test results showed that if they were happy, they were least likely to get coughs and sniffles. Then they conducted another experiment to see if emotions or personality affected the prevention of colds. They interviewed 193 healthy adults, and called each person everyday for two weeks. They asked the people about their good and bad feeelings that day. After the interviewing, the 193 got nose drops with the cold or flu in it. THeir symptoms depended on their feelings from the past two weeks.
I liked this article because the author explained the different experiments conducted and she explained the topic well. I think she should have used a graph or a diagram to show the experiment’s results.

I thought it was interesting about chicken eggs with drugs in them. It was a very good article. I thought the author did a good job explaining the details about the article. I think the author could have done a better job the pictures but there were okay. The pictures were kinda blurry. The author was very clear on what he wanted to say. It was a good article but i think he could have done allitle better.
