Cell Phones and Possible Health Hazards
Emily Sohn
Science News For Kids
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20030226/Note2.asp
This article is about how cell phones can be harmful to your body. Regular phones and cell phones use different ways to send the sound waves so regular phones are not harmful. A cell phone uses radiation which when held to your ear pulses across your brain and some scientists believe that it can cause cancer.
I think that cell phones can be harmful if you use them too much, but I do not think that you should really worry about it. In the article it talks about how Swedish scientists did an experiment with rats to see if phone really effect your brain cells and 2% of the rats brain cells were dead of dying. I do not think that 2% of your brain cells is worth worrying about.

I’ve definatley heard of how the radio waves can cause cancer. I usually find thoughs articles interesting but almost everything gives off radio waves so it’s not as if cell phones are espesically dangerous (2% of cells).

The article “Disease Detectives” was written by Emily Sohn, and was published on the website http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20061115/feature1.asp. The article was published on this website on November 11, 2006.
This article is mainly about kids who were participation in a national contest which is the Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge, where they compete for scholarship money and other prizes. They talk about how the kids work as teams and by themselves to complete a number of different kinds of challenges and problems. Every year there is a different theme chosen for the challenges, this year the theme was medicine and medical issues in the world. There were two main challenges that were happening, the article talks about only one of the major challenges. The challenge is all about the studies vital to colonoscopy’s. They use a new type of scan that is much less painful for the patient and may be able to detect colon cancer earlier then before.
I really loved how this article was written. The first couple paragraphs of the article are written as if the challenge of containing the bird flu in a small town. They do not tell you that this a pretend challenge in a contest. So she has you all scared that there is a major outbreak of the bird flu. After you get and worried then she tells you it is for a contest. This article gets you totally hooked from the beginning, so you keep reading until you get to the end of the article. They tell you about several of the medical challenges that they kids have to do work together or individually to solve to the best of their ability. The other challenge that is talked about is where the kids get to learn to use and do a virtual colonoscopy, a new way to look for cancer in the colon. This is a great new procedure for looking at the colon because, it is much less invasive to for the patient. What it is that the doctor threads a scope through the patients colon that has a little digital camera and a light to show you the colon. The kids job was to preform five mock scans on different colons. They had to try and find the cancerous cells in each of the colons. I thought that it is amazing that the kids were able to do that successfully and be able to understand what they were looking. I also loved that someone took the time to sit down and write about these kids that in my opinion are doing amazing things for people their age. They are learning a lot of skills that will be helpful for later in life and are earning money for college already. Sometimes I wonder how the kids motivated themselves to work so hard and to get somewhere. I think that it is to bad that more kids can’t motivate themselves to do well at school and start to get something accomplished at such an early age.

If you’ve had a hobby for a very long time and got very good at it, you wouldn’t want the way it’s done to change, would you? I’m sure that’s how the NBA professional basketball players felt when they found out that as the new basketball season started, they would start the season with a new type of basketball. This article, called ‘A New Basketball Gets Slick’ was about how for the new basketball season there has been a new type of ball made. It is made from Spalding, a basketball company. They no longer use leather on a basketball. They now use a special type of plastic. The article was written by Emily Sohn on November 8, 2006. I found it at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20061108/Note3.asp. Scientific studies at Spalding, tell that synthetic covering works much more efficiently than leather covering does. The article also talks about how one down side of the new basketball is that when the ball is wet; it gets very slippery and is hard to grip, whereas the leather basketball absorbs the sweat so it’s not too slippery. The ball might get wet when the players start to sweat a lot making it harder to play a game straight through because they will need to replace the ball a lot. I really liked this article a lot. I think it’s a good article all around. It was well written, I like the idea, and I think that it is something that people might actually really want to hear about. It could also be a good debate topic and turn into a good discussion. I think that there are up sides and down sides of this new type of basketball that Spalding has made. The good side of it is that change is good, and they are also saving many animal lives by not using leather. The bad side of it is that it may be hard for players to get adjust to because they are so used to playing with their normal leather basketballs. It will be harder to play the game because when they get sweaty, they are not going to be able to control the ball very well. I think that over all this was a really great article.

Soccer Referees Do Favor Home Teams, Study Shows
November 2, 2006
By: University of Bath
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/10/061030120410.htm
Summary- This article was about soccer refs being unfair towards away teams. It is now proven that referees are unfair to the away team in games. Something that is interesting is that researchers found that when the game is being televised, the refs don’t act unfair.
Reflection- I think that this article was well written, and it was very cool for me to read since I play soccer myself. I haven’t noticed this pattern in my games, but the researchers for this article watched English premiership games. Refs could or could not be doing this on purpose. It could just be luck that home teams seem to be favored it games. This article was not from science news for kids, and Emily Sohn did not write it, which was a first for me. After doing many article reports from Sohn, I could really distinguish the difference between her type of writing and this one’s. When I read this article, I looked for the author and decided that it was the University of Bath. I am guessing that this is a college or school, and I found it weird that a school would write an article.

I am surprised that the nba would change tha material of the balls. I would think that if they changed it at all, it would just be to a higher grade of leather. Plastic seems like it would be harder and less easier to wear in too. Awesome job with the article!

Emily Sohn (of course)
March 8,2006
A lot of people think that when someone falls or trips, it’s funny. But, scientists have concluded that more than one third of adults over 65 fall each year, and these falls can lead to many serious injuries like broken hips. Almost 13,000 people die each year from falls. So you’re probably thinking falling is a little more serious than you thought. Falling is such a serious subject that researchers at the Human Movement and Balance Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh are doing a new study of why some people are at a higher risk of falling than others. Their goal is to prevent falls and fall-related injuries in healthy adults and seniors.
I never thought falling was a very serious issue–I never knew that people could die from falls. Although, my great aunt Rhoda has fallen a lot, and had to be hospitalized, so I wasn’t totally suprised about this.

I actually have experienced favoring referees in my soccer games. The referees that favor their home teams are usually volunteers so that could be the reason. Although I have experienced this, I do not believe that this is true in professional soccer. I would assume that the referees are neutral.

That’s hard to believe that the NBA changed the type of ball. Leather seems like a better choice and a more familiar choice for the players. I agree with you that the players must have felt strange to be using a different kind of ball for their games.

First Evidence To Show Elephants, Like Humans, Apes And Dolphins, Recognize Themselves In Mirror
By Emory University Health Sciences Center
Oct. 31, 2006
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/10/061030183310.htm
This article explained how elephants are now part of the elite group. The elite group is a small group, including humans, apes, and dolphins and now elephants. The ‘test’ that animals must pass to become part of this group is called the mirror test. The mirror test is where scientists put a mirror in front of the subject, animal, and see how it reacts. If the animal recognizes itself it passes. Most animals do not recognize themselves and their reactions are flirtatious and more social. The elephants that were chosen for this test were from the Bronx Zoo, in New York. Scientists put up a huge mirror in front of them and watched how they reacted. They knew that the elephants could tell that it was their reflection they were looking at because the elephants were checking they’re foreheads and mouths out; places where elephants cannot regularly see.
It was interesting to read about the elephants joining the elite group. I had read one of Emily Sohn’s articles about how they used the mirror test to test Chimps but they were young chimps and did not all recognize themselves. The article said that this was not the first time they had tested the elephants but it was the first time with a big enough mirror for them to see themselves entirely. The article also stated that knowing that the elephants are part of the elite group; we can safely say that elephants have a very high intelligence.

A New Basketball Gets Slick
A New Basketball Gets Slick
Emily Sohn
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org
This article is about the National Basketball Association using a more hi-tech basketball for the game play. The basketballs before these were made out of leather, but now these are made out of a special kind of plastic. The company that makes these balls is called Spalding you probably have heard of it. This ball has a special covering that makes it perform better. Scientists in Texas found out that this ball is plastic and is less bouncy it might bounce it and it could go off track when it becomes slippery. They think that the NBA should I have to the leather ball.
My Response for this article is about what I think about the scientists and the NBA. I think that those scientists are going a little over the edge because its not like their going to put water on the ball in the middle of the game. I mean sweat is going to get on the ball but it will get wiped off in the next few times down the court. The second part of my response is on the NBA. I think that they made a good choice to change the balls to plastic because doesn’t leather come from an animal? Anyway the only bad this is that the balls are less bouncy, that is actually good and bad. I didn’t know Emily Sohn did articles really much on sports. She or whatever it is does a good job on writing these articles. This was a very interesting article because I’ve always wanted to know why the NBA changed the balls and now I found out.

Some good germs
By Susan T. Lennon
From the Newspaper \ Nov. 3-5, 2006
The Journal News
November 13, 2006
This article is about germs and how they are good for you. Some bugs can improve your health and pour diets can shrink the good germs. Sometimes bacteria can be good for you.
What I learned and liked about this article was that some bugs can be good for your health. Other things I liked is that the article is not all cramped together, the print is bold and it is also easy to read. Another thing is that it has a fact chart in the middle of the page and it tells me a fact and that is cool. It has a picture of a person laying down and eating yogurt. This was a good article because it was about eating healthy and it was not to long or too short.

Summary-The article is about chicago science tests scores being one of the lowest scores in the US. 8% of 4th graders there are profienct in science and 9% of 8th graders are. But its not just science, its math too. Kids there all around are failing their grade.
Reflection-I hope that does’nt happen in Croton or I’ll and a lot of other kids would have lots of stress on them. They say that the test scores are going up so I’m happy that they are improving their work.

Did the Tarantula Eat the Chili Pepper?
Fountain, Henry. “Spiders, Peppers and a Pathway to Pain.” New York Times, November 14, 2006.
mr.coolguy
In the University of California, David Julius and other colleagues have been testing venoms from tarantulas and scorpions. While testing a venom from a tarantula from the West Indies, they found that the venom activated the TRPV1 receptor. The same receptor that hot peppers cause to activate. The receptor causes the flow of ions into your nerve cells to increase. The TRPV1 receptor causes pain (like when you eat a chili pepper, your mouth explodes).
I think that it is interesting how spiders and hot peppers have adapted over time. Usually, when a tarantula bites you, the venom stops the activity of nerve cells so you die. But the venom of the West Indies tarantula activates the cell activity. This finding could help researchers and doctors find good anti-venom to help fight other venoms. I doubt that you would let a spider bite you instead of having peppers. This spiders venom is more painful than chili peppers. They just share the same compounds. They don’t want you to mess with them.

Space Umbrellas to Shield Earth by Emily Sohn, http://sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20061108/Note2.asp - November 8th, 2006
Whether you’ve heard about it from your parents, from your teachers or on the news, you’ve probably heard about the growing problem known as Global Warming. Global warming is a bad thing, and in the future could cause problems relating to temperature and UV light. Astronomer Robert Angel has composed a way that could possibly make global warming a lot less of a threat. Angel’s plan is to send millions of tiny spacecraft-umbrellas into outer space to work as umbrellas to protect us from the suns rays. The shades would be transparent, and would have holes in them, unlike many other plans to stop global warming, which involved massive structures. The downsides are that it’s a huge and expensive project, and it isn’t guaranteed to work.
I think that Angel’s idea is very creative, and is a great idea, but I also agree that there are probably cheaper ways to accomplish his goal. I also think people could put more effort into not using cars. I think this is one of Emily Sohn’s better articles, because it really explained everything I’d want to know, and didn’t leave me with a lot of unanswered questions. I hope Emily Sohn rights more article similar to this one, instead of writing articles that didn’t explain everything she wrote about.

Inexpensive Test Detects H5N1 Bird Flu Infections Quickly And Accurately
National Institute Of Allergy And Infectious Diseases
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/11/061113173159.htm
The University Of Colorado and the Center For Disease Control have created a chip, known as the MChip, to test for H5N1, otherwise known as the bird flu, and other strands of influenza. Over the three year span of the MChip, it managed to detect H5N1, as well as other strands of Influenza, and there were no false positive tests. The previous testing chip, the FluChip, could only test for what it was programmed to test for, and it is also slower and less reliable than the MChip. This is because the FluChip contains hemaggutin, neuraminidase, and matrix. Hemaggutin and neuraminidase both mutate frequently, thus the results were very unreliable. The MChip only contains matrix, which does not mutate nearly as frequently, thus the tests are more reliable. Matrix on its own is can also test for any strand of influenza, not just the kind it is instructed to. The materials to make a Mchip cost less than $10. The scientists are currently trying to create something similar to the MChip to test for HIV/AIDS.
The article itself provided a large quantity of information. There was not a need for all of the information and that article could have been condensed. For example the article stated that “the chip never indicated the presence of H5N1 when none was present.” Saying that the chip indicated no false positives would have been better than saying what the author said.
Overall, I thought the article was decent.

Article: Photo in the News: Monster “Hurricane” Spotted on Saturn
Author: Blake de Pastino
URL: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/11/061113-saturn-storm.html
This article was about a massive storm that scientists have found on Saturn. They have never found anything like this on any planet (except for earth) so it’s very big news in the science world. The storm is 5,000 miles wide and has a developed eye, just like storms on earth. Scientists say that the cyclone is swirling above Saturn’s pole at up to 350 miles per hour.
This article was really interesting. I didn’t know that there could be storms on other planets (but I guess no one else did either, since this is the first one). It’s such a weird thought that other planets have weather too. I wonder if they knew that other planets could have hurricanes, but it had never happened. I would be really interested in finding out more about the storm.

Cricket Killer
How to silence a Cricket
E. Jaffe
ScienceNewsForKids
This article is about special flies that kill crickets. They listen for the chirp of a cricket, then silently homes in on the unsuspecting cricket. It then lays its eggs in the cricket. When the eggs hatch, the larva eat their way out of the cricket and use it as their first meal. The crickets finally stopped chirping and mutated. The mutated crickets don’t have the special wing that makes the chirping noise so now they chill out with the normal crickets to get “babes” (or a mate, scientificly speeking ). The cricket population is decreasing (oh yeah, this is all taking place in Hawaii) in Hawaii where the flies, called the Ormia ochracea, live. The place where the Ormia ochracea live is called Kauai, which is an Hawaiian island. The flies are the size of horse flies and have huge red eyes. I think the author could have done a better job explaing the characteristics of the flie and what the common name for it is. I don’t know what a Ormia ochracea is.

Ancient Crash, Epic Wave
By Sandra Blakeslee
The New York Times
A large mountain range was created by a Meteoric Tsunami 4,800 years ago this monumental range had scientists stumped until they found a 13 mile diameter crater in the Indian Ocean.
This story caught my attention because the world has many mysteries and different hidden mountain ranges. The undersea depths are the most mysterious places in the world. The 4 “chevrons” could have been from an earthquake but if you go beyond the possibilities you could find amazing things. These large structures are each the size of Manhattan and the meteor supposedly wiped out 1/4th of the worlds population. At first they thought it would be impossible but they finally went to the facts.

The Snappy Lingo of Instant Messages
Emily Sohn
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com
This article was about instant messaging and how it is effecting our language. Linguistic experts and worried that the way that people talk on the instant messaging is how they’re going to talk in their every day life. In the article, it said “Reading a play by Shakespeare, you can see how much a language can change in four hundred years.” Those linguistics are worried that that is going to happen to the people who use instant messaging, but we’ll be using the “lingo” of that instead of how we talk now. The linguists are also worried about the computers, because they are the cause of the new “lingo”. There are some linguists who don’t think that the instant messaging language is a bad thing. David Crystal thinks that “The internet is allowing us to explore language in a different way.”
I use instant messaging every day, and yes, it can be distracting at times, but it has done nothing bad, so I don’t see why people are concerned. The only thing that changed was that I typed faster. I think that those linguists just want to keep things the way they are with language, which can be boring, and even if people do use the instant messaging type of language, than what’s so bad about that? I bet the people four hundred years ago thought that talking how we talk now would be improper, but here be are, talking like that. Change is inevitable, and it is going to happen sooner or later.

Weekend Weather Really is Different
By: Emily Sohn
From: http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20031015/Note3.asp
This article was about the weekend weather and how it is different than week day weather. Researchers say that the weather on the weekdays differs from the weekends. Part of the study used 660 different weather stations in the United States. They also said that the rise and fall on the week days and the weekends does not line up with any real cycles. I don’t really believe that this is true but it is kind of interesting.
When I read this article I really did not think that much of it was true. It did not make any sense that the weekday’s weather differed from the weekend’s weather. The weather really just depends on the climate, not the day of the week. I choose this article because I wanted to find out if this idea was really true. Sometimes it does feel like you are sitting in school and it is just beautiful out, but on Saturday it is cloudy and begins to rain. That does happen a lot but it can sometimes be really nice out on Saturdays and Sundays. I also found it interesting how they said that humans are to blame for the weekend weather because of air pollution. This article was very persuasive but I don’t think that weekend weather is always different than weekday weather.

Article Report
This article is called “Sharp Eye on the Sun” and it’s written by E. Sohn on November 16, 2006. I found it at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20061115/Note3.asp.
This article is mostly about how we recently putting a telescope, named Hinode, into outer space and how the telescope is taking pictures of the sun. Hinode can not only take pictures but it can also take x-rays of the sun. With Hinode they are not only learning more about the sun’s surface but its corona (atmosphere) as well.
I liked this article because the sun is a very interesting topic that people do not know a lot about. I also liked this article because it was well written and it had a lot of interesting facts in it that I didn’t know before.

I like your report because I found it very interesting that the larva eat the cricket from the inside out. One question I have is about whether the crickets mutated or if the larva just ate and killed the cricket but grew to look like it?

A Dire Shortage of Water
By: Emily Sohn
Published: August 25, 2004
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20040825/Feature1.asp
This article talks about how important it is for the earth to get water. Without a reliable source of water animals and plants would die out, we wouldn’t have anything to drink and electricity would become more expensive. Extreme drought shortages are happening
now in the western part of the United States. An area called the Colorado river basin is probably the worst drought in five hundred years. Rivers there are at their lowest record. The river basin is major source of water for many major cities such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Phoenix. If this continues it could because many
disasters. Entire ecosystems depend on this water, especially farmers in that area. The rivers and flood plains make up three percent of the land area, but that three percent provides energy for ninety percent
of the plants and animals that live in that region. Scientists have found out that a small change in the flow of the wind or water may have a huge effect on the climate around the world.
I think that the author of this article did a good job explaining her point, that it is very important for the earth to have a reliable source of water because ecosystems all around the world depend on it. I also think that the author made this article clear and easy to
understand. I think that it’s important for people to understand how important this issue is because if this keeps up then many plants and animals in the west will die. If it keeps up soon enough the same thing might happen in the east.

Sharp Eye on the Sun
Emily Sohn
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20061115/Note3.asp
The article that I read this week was about the new discoveries on studying the sun. The new discovery was that the suns thin outer atmosphere is hotter than the suns surface itself. Japan, the US, and Great Britain created a spacecraft called Hinode, which means “sunrise” in Japanese (written 日の出). The new space craft can do two things:
1. Can take pictures of the suns surface
2. Since it carries an X-Ray telescope, it detects hot gases in the Corona
I think that this was a good article. It updates people on what’s going on with the sun right now. When people look up at the sun in broad daylight, it looks the same all the time. But in detail, it is changing and people are discovering different things about the sun. This article was good because it was short but it gave a lot of information. It could have given more dates and more information on what’s going happen in the future studying the sun. This article gave out a clear main idea because it said it clearly at the beginning.

Hot Pepper, Hot Spider Nov. 15, 2006
Emily Sohn
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20061115/Note2.asp
This article was about the similarities between a hot pepper and spider venom. A different chemical in both spider venom and in hot peppers activate the same pain sensors in our cells. Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) did test on other animals to find out about their venom. They also did test on mice to see the affects of the venom. Future research might eventually help scientist make drugs to help people block pain.
I thought this article was some what interesting. I did not know there could be a connection between spiders and hot peppers. I find it hard to believe that chemicals from spider venom have the same effect on our cells that hot peppers do. I don’t really see how studying spider venom will help scientists create a drug to help block pain. I think the article would have been better if it talked more about how scientists will take this information and turn it into something good and something we all could use. The article was well written, I just wish it talked about the drug more than it talked about the research. I did not like this article. I am also getting tired of reading Emily Son articles. I will try harder next time to find a different author. Science News for Kids is a great website but I think I will try to find a different website next time.

A new Basketball gets Slick
This article is about the new plastic balls in the NBA. The ball was changed from leather to plastic. A plastic ball has a better grip for sweaty hands of NBA players.
I thought this article was okay. I don’t think that it’s worth writing an article about, but it’s pretty intresting. I think that this can effect every team in the NBA, it maybe can even effect how well they do in a season. Scientists say it’s more easy to grip the ball when it’s dry, and it doesn’t slide as much as the leather balls did. It’s going to be an intresting season. Maybe my team the Boston Celtics could improve with the new ball (Probably not though)!

Keeping bugs away from food
By E. sohn
This article was about how if you are on a picnic or something and bugs are coming near you u step away from your food and spray bug spray on yourself, but the bugs then go to your food anyway and continue to eat it. The scientists have created cardboard food cartons coated with a oil substance from a type of grass called, Citronella grass. the bugs don’t like the type of grass and don’t go near it usually, this helps people enjoy their picnic more and keeps the bugs away with out having that bad bug spray smell and without having a possibility of dangerous chemicals being in your food.
I thought this article was interesting because it had a good point and would be very helpful for those who like to go on picnics often. I think that the author did a good job showing their point, it was easy to read and easy to get. I think that the author doesn’t have much to improve but maybe add on to it or make it longer

This article MODEL AIRPLANE FLIES THE ATLANTIC from sciencenewsforkids.org/scripts/printthis.asp by Emily Shon is about a 11poundTAM-5 flew 1,888 miles from Canada to Irlend. The achievement came at a symbolic time in the history of flight. One hundred years ago, on Dec. 17, 1903 when the wright brothers made the first powered sustained, and controlled flight in a heavier-than-air flying machine at Kitty Hawk, N.C. The model airplane has a 74 inches long and with a 72-inch wingspan Ithink that tha is pretty amazing for a model air plane fling from canada to irlend. Ithink that emily shon did a good job supporting the main idea. She also did a good job at her spelling and grammer. I wouldnt do any thing to this article because it is perfect already.

This article talked about how crocodile hearts have an extra valve (other than take-in blood and send-out blood). The extra valve is a flap going towards the lungs. Crocodiles can close the flaps to send blood around their body instead of towards the lungs. Scientists haven’t always known what the flap was for—although some thought it helped them stay under water longer. Now, scientists think that the valve sends blood to the stomach to help the crocodiles digest faster.
I thought this article was really interesting. It’s so strange that alligators and crocodiles have an extra valve in their heart. I thought their heart would be built like a human one. Before this article, I never really thought about how animal’s organs/muscles are different than ours. This article really got me thinking.
