    Shark Fins: Weekly Science Article
Retell: Sharks have always thought to be monsters that kill humans relentlessly, and without stopping. But now, people have turned that title to themselves. People are hunting sharks for their fins, a highly demanded resource in Asia, by using a cruel process called finning, which involves hauling a shark on board, slicing it’s fin off, then throwing it back into the ocean to die. Shark population has decreased dramatically because of the over-hunting of the shark population, which will harm the ocean eco-system. The fins of a Whale Shark are worth 10,000 dollars in Asia, and other fins are very valuable as well, which invokes many fishermen to start slaughtering the sharks just for their fins.
Response: This is a very horrible thing that those fisherman are doing. The demand for shark fins is so ridiculously high, that everyone wants to kill the sharks! If we drive the population into extinction, the whole ocean’s ecosystem will be thrown into chaos! People have always called sharks “man-killers” when they are usually docile creatures that only attack humans by accident. And now, here we are, driving them to extinction. A plea has been put up to all countries to ban finning, but so far, only a few countries have agreed. That is just terrible. If the other countries continue to consume the sharks so much, they will kill a species that has survived obstacles that have been hurled at it from since before the time of the dinosaurs. We have to stop this outrage immediately, or we will all surely suffer the consequences.

    This is for ManiacLeprechaun.
I really enjoyed reading your article. (And congratulations on being the first person to post this week!)
I particularly appreciated how personally you are taking the issue.
    Good work.

“The Goby Roundup” by Craig Springer is from Conservationist Magazine, June 2005. This article was about a fish that grows to be 10” long. This fish is spreading from Lake Erie and conservationists are trying to stop it from going into the rivers because it eats the eggs of other fish.
I thought this was a good article because I think that this fish is bad because eats the other fish’s eggs

    Weekly Report

    Evolution and Those Baby Blues
    By:Nicholas Bakalar
    http://www.nytimes.com

The article is about blue-eyed men and women carry genes for only blue eyes, meaning that two blue-eyed children. But brown-eyed men and women can carry genes for both eye colors and can have either blue-eyed or brown-eyed or brown-eyed children. To test this idea, the researchers showed a group of 88 college students head shots of male and female models.

I think the article needed pictures of the groups of 88 college students. The article had no pictures thats not cool.

    Science Article
    Battling Mastodones by E.Slone.
It is about elephants. It is about how elephants live in the wild.
What I don’t like about the article is that it is really boring. It is to short and it needs more work. And the writer got the date wrong. It is 10/31/06 and the date of the article was 11/2/06.
What I like about the article is that it is so realistic. And it has a lot of facts. It has so many cool pictures of elephants.

    Is time travel possible?
    John Baruch
    article found: http://www.firstscience.com/SITE/ARTICLES/time_travel.asp

This article is about time travel and how scientists think that it may be possible. It was talking about these muon things that pass through our body but they are so small we don’t even feel them. The problem is that they only live for a millionth of a second. So how are they supposed to get to us? Scientists think that they pass through time in order to move to us without dying. Einstein has a theory that if you travel at the speed of light time will pass more slowly for you. So one hour could be like fifty years and that would be like traveling into the future.

I think that would be amazing if scientists came up with away to travel through time. There would be so many cool things you could do. There is always movies about it and stuff but I never thought that scientists actually think they can do it.

hilary duff, thats an interesting article. Thats not fair that brown eyes can give both blue and brown eyes and blue eyes can only give blue!

to maniac leprechaun, that really stinks that people are killing sharks like that. your right that the oceans ecosystem would get really messed up. I hope that people put a stop to this before it gets out of control

  • 13    green // Nov 1, 2006 at 7:31 pm

the coolest kid, I know what you mean when you say an article is boring. i hate that

  • 14    ManiacLeprechaun // Nov 1, 2006 at 10:05 pm

    This is for Bill’s article.
Bill, you have a very interesting article there. I think that you could have definitely made the re-tell and response longer. I believe that the fish is called the fish is called the “Alligator Fish” but I am not sure. I would also appreciate it if you posted the website where you got the article (if you got it from a website, it may be a newspaper article) because I would love to read it. This is a good article choice because it really relates to what we have been doing in class recently.

This is for Hillary Duff’s article.
I like your article that you chose, it was very neat. The concept seems very realistic, not to far fetched at all. I think your response could be a little longer. But, it was a very good article.

  • 16    ManiacLeprechaun // Nov 1, 2006 at 10:10 pm

This is for The coolest kid’s article.
I really think you need a longer re-tell of the article, it’s hard for me to get a very good idea of what the article is about. That is very good of you that you were able to spot those mistakes made by the author. I like elephants. But, a little more detail will make me happy, I want to know more about what you think of the article.

  • 17    ManiacLeprechaun // Nov 1, 2006 at 10:14 pm

    This is for green’s article.
You are right, time travel would be amazing. But, I do think it could be very heavily abused. People could do horrible things with that kind of power, it would have to be heavily regulated. Those muons sound like amazing things, like something out of a sci-fi movie. If we could find a way to contain them, that would just be amazing. This is a truly wonderful article. ^_^

    Weekly Science Report

Article Name: Study Faults Brain Defect in SIDS
    Author: Lindsey Tanner
Where it can be found: http://www.denverpost.com/portlet/article/html/fragments/print_article.jsp?articleId=4582805&siteId=36

This article is about a team of scientists who researched what causes Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The team wanted to know why the babies were dying. To do this experiment, scientists took the brain tissue from 31 SIDS babies and 10 infants who died of other causes. The scientists saw that SIDS may be caused by brain-stem abnormalities. The brain-stem abnormalities are a result form an imbalance in the way the brain uses the neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin helps regulate moods and is the target for anti-depression drugs. Besides that, it also effects how you breathe and the way you wake up from sleep. The researchers saw that serotonin defects probably cause half of all SIDS infants. The researchers are currently unable to detect any defects in an infant until after the infant dies. In 10 years the researchers hope to be able to detect the defects before death so that parents will be able to take certain measures in order to deter SIDS.

This article really interested me because it was talking about SIDS, which kills more than 2,000 U.S. infants each year and is the leading cause of death for infants. I was also interested because it talked about how a chemical imbalance that effects depression can also effect the way you breathe and how you wake up. I never would have thought that the same chemical could regulate both. Even though this article is interesting, it is also very sad because it talks about dead infants. If researchers can find a way to prevent SIDS, so many more infants would live each year. It is really good that they are researching this.

I’m so surprised that so many infants have this chemical imbalance. Is it hereditary? Are there certain groups that are more effected by SIDS? I wish the author had added more information about SIDS and had more statistics. It would have been more helpful. It was a well-written article though, but it was sad.

I think the article you chose was really interesting, but next time you should put more in your reflection. Maybe spend more time on it.

This article is from http://www.coolquiz.com/trivia.explain./docs.hotdog,asp and this article doesn’t say who its by.
This article is about how hotdogs are really not made out of left over scraps of meat and of things like that, such as pig snouts. This article also tells you how to make home made hotdogs with pig intestine instead of synthetic casing . It also tells pretty much everything about hotdogs.
I think this article is really interesting because it does things I never herd of before. Did you know that the average American eats about sixty four hotdogs a year?.

  • 22    spygirl93 // Nov 2, 2006 at 6:20 pm

i got this articl at timeforkids.com
My article the buzz on a new bee by Claudia Atticot was very interesting. This article is about a bee fossil that was just recently found. The fossil is around 100,000,000,000 years old and is not like any other bee fossil. It looks like a bee and a wasp mix except it is only the size of a mosquito. Its back legs look like a wasps back legs and it has very small hairs that are supposed to be used for pollen.

Before this article I never knew how bees pollinate and that bees could be so tiny. I have always been afraid of bees and maybe if this type of bee was around I wouldn’t be so afraid. I think that if the article said more about the bug and had more information people would understand it better. Also people would probably respond to it if it was more descriptive and had more facts. I thought that this article was very interesting it just needed a little more information.

My article is called, “Decoding How Bees Work,” another well written piece by Emily Sohn. It can be found at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20061101/Note2.asp.

This article is about how scientists have found some clues to what makes bees do what they do. A group of researchers found an entire set of genes (also called a genome) of the western honeybee. The article also says what genes are made of (DNA) and how the genes can help scientists learn about the “biology behind the behavior”.

I learned a lot from this article such as how genes are very important because by decoding them, you can learn a lot about an organism. I especially liked reading the article on bees in particular because I don’t know a lot about the details of bees and their DNA, so I got to learn more about bees, and in addition to that, I learned about genes and what part they play in learning about the habits of an organism.

    Weekly Science Article

The article I read was “Microbes at the Gas Pump.” By Jennifer Gutraro. The article was about how scientist are trying to find a new may to make gas for our cars and what ingredients they are using. They are trying experiments with cows stomachs, termite guts and rotting logs. They want to use these materials in the gas because to make gas you have to mix gasoline and ethanol. To make the ethanol to meet our emery needs they are developing a method to turn plant parts into ethanol but they can’t break down the plant parts all the way because the plants have a complex molecule in them called cellulose. So they are trying to use those things to break down the cellulose.
This article kind of disgusts me when I first read it. I was thinking that it would be disgusting thinking that you were putting cow stomachs in your car. I think that if they started using it in the gas some people would have very strong feelings about it and start protesting not to kill animals. If people just are having problems with killing animals to eat them how would you think they would react to them being into our gas tanks. I also think that it would be better for the environment too. I t could be better for the ozone layer. We would probably spend less money on gas too and that would be a lot better for everyone

  • 36    Gia Beth // Nov 2, 2006 at 10:46 pm

The article I read is called “Living in the Desert” written by Jennifer Cutraro. I found it at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20061101/Feature1.asp

“Living in the Desert” is about the ways different animals have adapted to living in the desert. Sand gazelles can shrink their livers up to 30 percent to save water. Along with shrinking their livers they breath less often keeping more water vapor in their bodies. Kangaroo rats preserve water they get in the seeds they eat. And the sand grouse flies to the nearest river (50 to 60 miles away) and soaks its chest with water to bring back to its nestlings.

I think the author did a good job explaining the adaptations different desert animals have to store water in the heat. It explains that the sand gazelles “allow their livers to shrink by up to 30 percent - all in effort to conserve water.” The mitochondria in the cells of the liver change food into energy for growth and other functions (respiration) requiring oxygen that comes from the air the animals breathe. Every exhalation picks up some of the water from inside of the lungs and puts it into the air as water vapor. “These animals ‘breathe less often and, over time, lose less water.’” All other animals that were talked about were explained just as thoroughly. Also there are questions in the article that you might ask while reading it with the answers below. That’s why I think the author did a good job with the article.

    Weekend Weather Really is Different

In certain places the weather is different then it is on week days. Reasearchers have realized that the weather average on Saturday, Sunday and Monday was different than the average on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The difference was small- only a tenth of a Celsius degree, but it was enough to make the scientists notice. Southern U.S. tempature ranges were normally broader on weekends. In the Midwest, weekdays were bigger of a daily temperature change. They lame human activties, like air pollution from certain activties affected the weather. Tiny particles in the air could affect the amount of cloud cover, which would affect it daily.

    Author: Whitney Dangerfield
    Found in: National Geographic
    Name: Killer Mice

In the South Atlantic area almost a million albatrosses die each year due to a species of killer mice on Gough Island. These mice were most likely descended from the stowaway mice on the ships that sailed there in the 1800’s. These mice went from feeding on insects to animals 250 times their size.
These mice sometimes eat birds alive and they attack by swarming a nest. Sometimes it takes the birds days later to die after infection or blood loss.
In 2006, a society that protects the birds is receiving a grant to study on how to eradicate the mice to save the birds.

I think that this article was interesting and pertains to our study of the food chain in science. I never thought that mice could be carnivorous in the sense that they attack large birds. This article caught my eye because of the title. I thought it was a joke or about some disease, I didn’t expect it to be about mutated mice that attacked birds 250 times their size. I wonder what the society will do to eradicate the mice. Will it hurt the mice? Will this eradication destroy the whole ecosystem and circle of life? The food chain? I am definitely reading about the outcome.

  • 44    rorofosho // Nov 5, 2006 at 12:21 pm

Yo mr.a- i dunno were i put my article so im posting it again

    Weekly Article

I read the article “How Electric Guitars Work,” by Marshall Brian. I found this article on howstuffworks.com. I wanted to read this article because I just got a new guitar and wondered how it worked. The article, if you haven’t guessed already was about how a guitar works. A guitar works by sensing magnetic pickups underneath the strings. Sound waves are picked up, and sent to the speaker, or an amp. The article also showed how an amp’s distortion works. Distortion is when instead of a clean sound you get a dirty one. This is caused by too much circuitry.

I liked this article very much. Mainly, because I’m interested in the subject. I liked this article because in most parts it had very specific details, and explained other areas pretty well. I also like how the author had links to other sites about the topic, and had many pictures. I liked how the article gave you examples of different guitar samples so you could listen to the differences in them. What I didn’t like was that the paragraphs were a little too short. I like short paragraphs, but this doesn’t let you get into the paragraphs idea, because by the time you do, it’s over.

You can find this article at
    http://entertainment.howstuffworks.com/electric-

  • 50    White Ivy // Nov 14, 2006 at 5:37 pm

The article I read is called “In Memory Of Luna”, and it’s by Bob Grant.
The article is about a male orca whale named Luna who stole the heart of many whale watchers, Pasific Northwest natives, and marine mammal researchers. Luna was a carefree whale, and was very interested in people. He would always swim right up to the boats out of curiosity of the boats and the people inside. It was a sad day when Luna was hit by a tugboat propeller in March, and died. Three pods of orca whales that constitute the Southern Resident Orcas were added to the endangered species list in November, 2005. The Southern Resident population occupies the lower Puget Sound off the coast of Washington state. But on the upside, scientists who study the Puget Sound orcas found that the southern resident whales have returned from their winter migration. The whales are healthy and full of bounce. Their number has also increased, as they brought home 2 new calves with them.
I’m really glad that people are helping the orca whales, and i’m also glad that the orca whales are doing so well. I might have known this already, but I don’t recall knowing that the orca whale was on the endangered species list. I really liked this article!

    Feed yourself
    Some good germs
    By Susan T. Lennon
    From the Newspaper \ Nov. 3-5, 2006
    The Journal News
    November 13, 2006

This article is about germs and how they are good for you. Some bugs can improve your health and pour diets can shrink the good germs. Sometimes bacteria can be good for you.

What I learned and liked about this article was that some bugs can be good for your health. Other things I liked is that the article is not all cramped together, the print is bold and it is also easy to read. Another thing is that it has a fact chart in the middle of the page and it tells me a fact and that is cool. It has a picture of a person laying down and eating yogurt. This was a good article because it was about eating healthy and it was not to long or too short.

This article is about germs and how they are good for you. Some bugs can improve your health and pour diets can shrink the good germs. Sometimes bacteria can be good for you.

I found my article at http://www.firstscience.com/site/articles/flu.asp
This article talk about how the flu pandemic was killed out 80 years ago, and that even though our medicine is more advanced than it was 80 years ago there is still a risk that another pandemic could be started. It also says that it would take 5-6 months to make a cure for a new flu. I think this is a major problem, but a new flu hasn’t revealed itself. When a new one does we will not be safe.

    Ancient Crash, Epic Wave
    By Sandra Blakeslee
    The New York Times
A large mountain range was created by a Meteoric Tsunami 4,800 years ago this monumental range had scientists stumped until they found a 13 mile diameter crater in the Indian Ocean.
This story caught my attention because the world has many mysteries and different hidden mountain ranges. The undersea depths are the most mysterious places in the world. The 4 “chevrons” could have been from an earthquake but if you go beyond the possibilities you could find amazing things. These large structures are each the size of Manhattan and the meteor supposedly wiped out 1/4th of the worlds population. At first they thought it would be impossible but they finally went to the facts.
