    “A Dino King’s Ancestor.” By E. Sohn. http://sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20060215/Note2.asp

This article was about a dinosaur that lived before the T. Rex. It was a dinosaur that was smaller than the T. Rex, but was the first of its huge kind. This means that the T. Rex was not the first huge meat-eating dinosaur. This one, called the Guanlong wucaii was. It had a huge bump on its forehead that was not used for fighting, or some sort of blowing through. So scientists think it is a way to tell male from female, or to tell of its kind.

I didn’t think this article was so good. It was kind of not informational, and didn’t keep me interested in it. But I do have to say it was one of Emily Sohn’s better articles. But it kinda stunk.

    Striking Ferret 10/31/06 HALLOWEEN!
Decoding How Bees Work by Emily Sohn
I found this article at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20061101/Note2.asp

This article was about scientists who decoded the genome of a honeybee. A genome is an entire set of genes.

I thought the author did a good job in describing her main points. I thought she did this when she said why it was so exciting when they finally decoded the genome of bees. I think she also supported one of here main points well when she said that honey bees have some of the same genes as humans. She also supported the main idea that honeybees’ genes are different from other species genes when she said that honeybees have 170 genes for smelling and fruit flies only have 60.

I think she could have said more about the honeybee’s actual genes to improve this article. I also think she could have said more about how scientists decoded the Genome of honeybees.

    Computers with attitude
    An article by Sorcha McDonagh

In this article, Sorcha talks about the invention of computers that can tell what emotions you are experiencing. She also ses, that MIT, is working on computers that use a combination of cameras, sensors and voice recognition to effectively monitor your mood. This was a very well written article, as she had a very effective intro, that helped set up the rest of the piece. She uses pictures, and exsplanes things very well. In my opinion, there were no flaws in this article.

Very well done! You give what she did right/wrong very well, and used very good langauge to describe it.
    A+!

That is really cool yet sort of freaky. It would be weird for a computer to tell you what you’re feeling.

Striking Ferret, You were very detailed in your refletion. I think it was really good.

I smile. I blow kisses. I give hugs. I wave.
This is how I greet people everyday. I greet them with body language. I learned even more about body language when I read reading body language.
In the article K. Greene, the athor explained about the way your body looks and the way your face looks when you are talking to someone. The article, published Novemeber second, two-thousandfive was okay.
There were somethings I didn’t like. It was a little confusing and since I found it in Science News for Kids, it should be easy to understand. Although it was difficult to get, it was interesting and pretty cool.
I think this article is overall pretty well written.

This article is about scientists found a planet 230 light-years from the Earth. The planet is about 55 times as far from the star as Earth is from the sun.
Its massive is about five times as Jupiters mass.

    Baboons Listen for Who’s Tops
    By E. Sohn
    http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com

The article I chose is about baboons being able to recognize their leaders or other baboons just by listing.
I thought the article was very interesting but it didn’t catch my attention. I never new that baboons could do that but I just didn’t like the article. I love animals but the article was short, didn’t have enough information, boring, did not talk enough about the animals. I was looking for an article about animals and all I found was an article talking about scientist discovering something an animal can do. I think the author did a horrible job explaining what these mammals can do. I think she needed to explain more about the animal.

    Supersight for a Dino King
    By: Eric Jaffe
    http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org
This artical was about how scientist are now suggesting that Tyrannosaurus Rex known as T-REX
had some of the best vision in animal history. In the movie Jurassic Park in one scene a person said not to worry beacuse T-Rex cant see things that move. It turns out that T-Rex had pretty amazing vision. Better then people. It also when on to explain how T-Rex was knows as a meat eating dino. Scientist disagree on whether T.Rex hunted for its food or ate leftovers from other dinosaurs. The artical was well written and really made me think about the facts.

    Grades Slipping? Check for Snoring
    Emily Sohn
    Science News for Kids

The article talks about how snoring affects your grades. Kids who snore are four times more likely to get bad grades in school.

I liked this article. It showed two different theories. One was that snoring makes less blood go to your brain. That was proven wrong. The other one is that snoring makes you lose sleep. The article doesn’t go much deeper then that. It was conducted on third graders I would have liked to have seen if it’s true with older kids too.

    LUNGS
This article is about the dos and don’ts for lungs. It describes what to do and what not to do with your lungs. I liked this article because it gave good facts. You should exercise. You should do anything to get your heart pumping. Did you know that you should breathe deeply three times a day? There are bad things too. Smoking is one. These are some chemicals in cigarettes, ammonia, cadmium and Arsenic which is rat poison.

I liked this article a lot. It was fun to read.

The article I read is “Internet Generation” by Emily Sohn, from Science News for Kids, October 25, 2006.

This article is about how the internet can be good for kids, but also how it can be really dangerous for kids. Scientists have been questioning whether or not the internet is a good or bad thing for kids to use. Since the internet can be used for so many different thing, like research, homework, email, instant messaging, chat rooms, myspace and so many others, it’s hard to tell if the internet is unsafe for kids. Especially since among all the good things, the internet can be a place for child abduction. It even says that most young children don’t even realize their internet is connected by network to millions of other people.

I liked this article. It gave a lot of information and you could tell it was thoroughly researched. I choose this article because I go on the internet almost every single day, like I’m sure a lot of middle school students, and I wanted to learn more about the details of it. This article was long, but it didn’t end up being difficult to read or really confusing. I thought it was especially good how the article gave statistics and percents. I think that made the article really convincing and backed up what they were saying. A final detail I liked was how they put in a lot of perspective. They told what the parents might worry about, what the kids thought the internet was, what kids had access to and went to on the internet, and more. I think that the article was really well written.

    Hotdawg911 “Living in the Desert”

I thought that this article was thorough and informative. It showed strange, and informative ways that animals get water or get hydrated in places such as the desert. I thought that this article was good because it gave interesting information about water conservation. Like that gazelles shrink their livers up to 30%, or that the kangaroo rat gets its water from nuts. I also didn’t know that you lose water every time you breathe. That happens because every exhalation picks up some of this water as vapor and carries it out of the body. Even though all this is good, and everything, I think this article is just a bit too long, and a little bit boring.
Overall this article was good and bad. And that Jennifer Cutraro did a very good job.

Surprises in a New Tally of Areas Vulnerable to Hurricanes
New York Times October 10, 2006

After reading this article, I learned of all areas that are of greatest risk to hurricanes. Some of these include New Orleans, Florida Keys, Coastal Mississippi, Miami/Fort Lauderdale, Cape Hatteras, N.C., Eastern Long Island and Tampa, Florida. I did not know that these areas were at such great risk. It is good to know that New York City is the last on the list of being at great risk.

I enjoyed reading this article and finding out how scientists have determined what areas are the most vulnerable to the loss of life and property damage due to hurricanes. It is very important that this information is available for us to learn.

    Chocolate Power!
    By Stephen James O’Meara
    Odyssey Magazine
    November 2006 Issue
    (bottom of page #2)
    November 1, 2006

This article is about milk chocolate and dark chocolate and how chocolate makes you feel good while improving your memory and increasing your brain performance. The scientists did a scientific experiment to prove their theory. They compared people who ate milk chocolate, dark chocolate, carob (a chocolate substance made from the pods of an eastern Mediterranean tree) or nothing. The volunteers ate 85 grams of milk chocolate, 85 grams of dark chocolate, and 85 grams of carob and nothing at all. They tested the volunteers after 15 minutes of digestion and found that the milk chocolate made the volunteers perform better with visual and verbal memory.

I liked this article because it had a yummy looking picture and it was a short article. It has a word marked in red with the meaning at the bottom. It was good that it was not cramped together and the letter size was easy to read.

    Hot Summers, Wild Fires
    By
    E. Sohn

    July 26, 2006

This article, Hot Summers, Wild Fires is about wildfires, the destruction that they cause, and explians why the northern Rocky Mountains region has had so many wildfires. Scientist form the Universtiy of Arizona looked at the weather, climate, snow and the records. Their study showed that the fire season started earlier, lasted longer, and burned larger areas. Warmer spring and summer temperatures may be the cause of the change in wildfires. Also, the early melting snow may be a cause in this change. The forest becomes drier through summer and can catch fire and burn more easily.
I thought this article was okay. The article did not really interest me. It was easy to read. The part I thought was interesting, was that the Scientist believe that the changes in the climate are the reason we are having bigger and more dangerous fires. I think this is really scary. What is going to happen in the future?

    Are Propellers Fin-ished?

    Information

This article was written by Carrie Lock on September 15, 2004 and was found
    on the website address: http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20040915/Feature1.asp

    Summary

This article talked about how boat engineers are trying to copy the style of a penguins (and some other marine animals) fins to help the boat go faster. They have already built one, and it works very well. It really is a breakthrough in boat technology. They continue to talk about this great idea all through the article.

    Reflection

I thought this was a horrible article. It was very poorly written and confusing.
Though there were plenty of pictures, the words were complicated and the article was too long.
I did think that the topic was good though. Even if the writer did a lousy job writing it!

    Bright blooms that grow
    by:E.sohn
The screaming pink, blazing Oranges, neon reads, and acid greens of many posters and singes owe their brightness to the way thoes materials are effected by light. The secret to these bright colers is called fluorescence A materials sush asigment, fluorescecce if it absorbs light of a certain wavelenghth and then,in turn, gives off light of a longer wavelength. The part of a fouro`ciock flower that appear yellow under white light. Now,resrarchers have found that four-o`clocks,portulacas,and certain other flasy flowers glow, too. These are the first flowers that anyone has found that natually glow within the range of light that people can see, says a team of Spanish scientists. A few other types of flowers give off ultraviolet light. theas visaibly gloeing flowers owe their brightness to pigments called betaxanthins. the Spanish researchers found that blue light causes betaxanthins to glow yellowish-green. so,the parts of the flower that look yellow also emit green fluorescent light. Fouro`clcks also have a violet pigment called betanin in some places, the scientist found. Betanin works as an anti-fluorscent by absorbing most of the fluoresent light that the betaxanthins emit. the pattern of fluorescent and non-fluorescence might help attract bees and other insecent that pollinate the flowers, the scientist suggest. Attracting pollinatoros can`t be thwe only expolanation, though, because the effect appears to be weak. it`s also possible that betaxanthins help protect the flowers from stress in their envrement

    It’s a Small E-mail World After All
    by Emily Sohn

This article is about how fast e-mails can travel. IN this article, scientists explained an experiment that they conducted involving 24,000 people. The people were supposed to forward an e-mail to someone they know and that person was supposed to forward that e-mail to someone else, and so on. After this e-mail was forwarded, scientists picked a random “target” that the e-mail was supposed to finally reach. THe article also explained how only 384 people got the e-mail to the random “target.”

I didn’t really enjoy this article because I expected something different than what it explained. I expected it to be about how fast an e-mail can actually get from one person to another person. But it was because it sort of went along the lines of my idea and it explained about a cool experiment scientists did. I think article did a pretty good job of explaining how fast e-mail can go.

    Setting A Prime Number Record
    by Emily Sohn

This article is about how scientists are trying to find the biggest prime number possible. This article explains what a prime number is, how scientists are attempting to find the biggest prime number, and it explains the biggest prime number they have found so far. Did you know that the biggest prime number so far is 7,816,230 digits long!

I actually really enjoyed this article because we are studying prime numbers in math, and it was cool to get to know more about them. My math teacher, Mrs. Timpano, was explaining to us tht the highest prime number is being discovered by scientists. Prime numbers are interesting because they can only divide evenly into itself or one. I liked how Emily Sohn was very descriptive, and she could informed everyone about prime numbers.

    Losing With Heads Or Tails
    by Emily Sohn

This article is about how coin tosses may not be that fair. The scientists did an experiment and found out if the coin started on heads, there’s a tiny bigger chance that it will land on heads after you flip it. A coin needs to spin in just the right way to have an actual equal chance of heads or tails. So if the coin wobbles, it’s not an equal (or fair) chance anymore.

I thought this article was interesting because it talked about a topic you don’t really think about as unfair, everyday. I liked how Emily Sohn got into the fact that coin tosses have to spin the right way, that scientists are experimenting on this topic, and how it’s not exactly a heads or tails fifty-fifty chance. Who would imagine that coin toss could be so unpredictable. I think Emily Sohn did a pretty good job explaining the advantages and disadvantages of coin tosses.

Grannies Give Gift of Longer Life

This article was about how having a grandmother in your life might help you live longer. It explained that scientists’ studies have shown that for every ten years women lived past fifty, they ended up with two extra grandkids. Scientists have also found that people had children two-three years earlier if their mothers were still alive. Grandmothers have been raising their grandchildren for about 200,000 years.

I thought this article was interesting because I learned a lot of new things like: love can actually help you live longer, make you have kids earlier, and grandmothers who were alive got two extra grandchildren ten years after age 50. I didn’t really didn’t like this article too because it wasn’t descriptive and it didn’t really go deep to get enough information about the topic. Overall, Emily Sohn did a good job about explaining the advantages of grandmothers.

    A new basketball gets slick

    - Emily Sohn

the article is about how they have a new kind of basketball .

I did not really like this article very much because it did not tell me very much about the new kind of basketball. Al l it really said is that now they have the ball as plastic now leather and how that there is a good side to the leather balls and a good side to the plastic balls and they have bad things about them. they the plastic balls are more slippery but when they are wet they are more sticky and the opposite for leather balls and they don’t know what is better.
