    Weekly Science Report #6
The name of this article is Screaming for Ice Cream written by Emily Sohn.
I found this article in http://www.ScienceNewsforkids.org . The exact site is http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20050810/Feature1.asp .

    Summary
This article is about how ice cream is very hard to make perfect. When someone wants ice cream, they usually want creamy flavor full ice cream that is nice and cold for the summer. It’s also so about how everyone picks at every little thing like the ice cream being grainy or syrupy or tasting artificial. One thing this article talks about is how all the fat in ice cream is adding up and it is contributing to obesity, diabetes and other health problems like heart disease.

    Reflection
I picked this article because I myself am a big fan of ice cream. Also I know a lot of people that are also very much in love with ice cream but are VERY picky about how their ice cream tastes. Whether there are any ice crystals in the creamy mixture, if it’s grainy, what flavor it is, etc. I think that it is true that the ice cream has to be just right. If it doesn’t taste good, what’s the point of eating it? One problem; when someone is eating ice cream, it’s usually a special occasion, or just because you want to have a treat. That’s the thing. Ice cream is a treat. If people start eating it way too much like everyday, they will start gaining weight and it might lead to obesity or diseases. It’s true that we need fat so our bodies can run on some type of energy, but we don’t need so much. I also forgot to mention that in the article, it mentions that there are more expensive types of ice cream but the reason some of them are more expensive is because they don’t have so much air in them. When ice cream is made, some of the cheaper brands are about 50% air so you aren’t really getting as much as you thought. In some of the more expensive types, they are only getting 15-20% air so you are getting more of the delicious cream. I wonder whether the air could be bad for you. Could eating something that is 50% air be good for you? Could it possible be bad or does it not really matter? Seeing as a lot of people are screaming for ice cream, it could make a big difference. I’d eventually like to find out.

Citation- My article is called Sea Otters, Kelp, and Killer Whales by Emily Sohn. I found this article at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com.
Summary- This article is about how in the 1910’s sea otters were no longer around Washington and Oregon because the hunters capturing them for their fur coats. Their fur is really thick and they used it to make coats. Now in Alaska Killer Whales are eating the sea otters because seals and sea lions are hard to find. It talks about without sea otters the ecosystem could fall apart because it’s a keystone predator.
Reflection- I really liked this article because I really like sea otters. I thought it was really interesting how killer whales are eating sea otters. I wish she had put in more facts about them becoming endangered rather than have facts about the sea otters. She kind of went of topic. I also thought the pictures were really cute.

I really liked your article and I thought it was very intersesting. I myself am a big fan of ice cream. That’s really interesting how air can make a difference in price but I understand why.

    Will Climate Change Despose Monarchs?
    By Emily Sohn
    http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20031119/Note3.asp

    Summary:
This article explains how the monarch butterfly may become extinct fifty years from now due to the climate changes in Mexico. Monarch butterflies spend their summers in western United States and then migrate to California or Mexico, depending on if they live east of the rockies or not. The ones east of the rockies go down to Mexico, versus the monarchs in the western United States and Canada. It also explains how Karen Oberhauser of the University of Minnesota did computer analysis to predict the upcoming January weather in the places in Mexico where the butterflies normally migrate. The analysis says the temperature will still be good for the butterflies, but the precipitation should triple by 2050. These monarch butterflies have never been known in such wet conditions. If the climate change happens as expected, researchers hope that the monarchs will adapt and migrate to other places.

Reflection: This article is interesting because it shows how technology can influence our society. However, it can be a disadvantage because we can prepare ourselves for something that may not happen: as hard as we try, I do not believe we can predict our futures. Just like how the weather channels are not always correct; I believe this situation is equivalent. The monarchs will hopefully adapt and maybe may start a new species of monarchs that can withstand cold temperatures. I believe the article was well written, but I do not believe it particularly captivated the reader.

I think you chose a really cool topic! I like how Emily Sohn wrote your article as well as mine. Mine was about butterflies and how the travel for the winter. I think its good that she can write about a variety of topics and not narrow herself to one topic.

I love sea otters too! they’re so cute and fuzzy! It’s really sad that the killer whales are having to eat sea otter just to stay alive! Yeah they’re an endagered species. But what i want to know is where are all the seals and sea lions? Nice name too, its very secretive about who you are!

    Weekly Science article report #6
    Pd. 8, Lab E Oct. 25th 2006

    Citation:
Title: Tumor Type May Explain Survival Rates for Cancer
    Author: Nicholas Bakalar
    Source: http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/24/health/24canc.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
    Publication: October 24, 2006

    Summary:
New study shows evidence that African-American women have lower breast cancer survival rates compared to white and Hispanic population. Scientists concluded that tumors in the black woman were chemically different then in the other 2 groups. In addition, black woman more likely to get larger tumors and a more cure-resistant type of breast cancer called estrogen receptor negative disease. Factors such as socioeconomic diversity were not considered in the study so the subject deserves more research with subjects’ status in mind.

    Response:
I suspect the difference in the biology of the tumor and the estrogen receptor negative disease breast cancer are somehow linked. African-Americans and the Hispanics tend to be a poor population. I noticed in the article that it’s mainly the blacks who have worse symptoms- not the Hispanics. From this I can guess it’s not dependent on where they live. This is why I believe that their symptoms must have some sort of relation. I think the author did a good job with the information he had but, I don’t believe it was enough. I would really like to know more. I wonder if they find the link between the tumor biology and the disease it could lead to diminishing it once and for all. Perhaps it’s not the worst type of cancer, but one cancer down will mean allot.

Sticking Around with Gecko Tape (by S. McDonagh), June 11, 2003
    http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com

The article I read was about how geckos feet help it stick to many surfaces. It said that geckos have millions of microscopic hairs attatched to their feet which help them stick to these surfaces such as walls. Scientists have been working on a way to create something similar to the geckos feet. They created something called gecko tape. Gecko tape is the same thing as the gecko’s feet (millions of hairs), although they have only come up with enough to support a spiderman toy weighing 3 kilograms. The article said that the tape is so strong that if you had enough to cover your palm, you could hang from the ceiling!

This article was short but good. I liked it because it really made me think. I thought, with this tape, anyone could be like spiderman and climb up walls and hang from the ceiling. That would be awsome! In the spiderman movies now, they used special effects, but imagine spiderman in the future, without the effects, for real! This article was great and I really liked it. I rate the article a 8.9 out of ten.

Element 118, Heaviest Ever, Reported for 1,000th of a Second By James Glanz
Found in the New York Times on Tuesday October 17

Summary: A group of Russian and American scientists claim that they created the heaviest element ever seen in a lab. They say that it was only there for less than 1,000th of a second. The new substance will be known as element 118 (because of the high amount of protons in its nucleus) until a lab either proves them wrong or right. Dr. Ken Moody was the head American scientist and did all he could to keep the information from being fabricated by other members of the team. He did this because in 1999 a California lab announced that they had discovered the 118th element but closer investigations brought there claim to an end. A member of the California lab had fabricated (made up) the information. The Russian lab has announced the find of their fifth element discovery. They have discovered elements 113, 114, 115, 116, and 118-none of which have been confirmed by other scientists because of the kind of effort and danger it would incorporate in the completion of the experiments. In six months of smashing different smaller elements together they created maybe three atoms of this new element. Many other scientists agree that there were no scientific flukes and that if someone investigated that there would be no evidence against their discovery. Out of one trillion bombardments of Calcium (20 protons) and Californium (98 protons) detectors found two sets of these two elements stuck together to make element 118. Because it has so many protons it is the heaviest element ever created. It is also one of the most stable elements created.

Reflection: I thought that this article was very interesting. I found the discovery of a new element was fascinating. I thought that the article was good but I got bored towards the end because of the endless flow of information. I think that the article would have been better if there was a little less information because it can confuse the reader if the information gets to be more and more complex. I would have written the article to be a little shorter and would have not put in so much information about the scientists themselves. I believe that the author could have been clearer in his descriptions. Over all I thought the article was interesting and a worthwhile read.

My aricle is called Making Sense of Scents by K. Ramsayer. I found this article at http://sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20050601/Note3.asp

This aricle is mainly about how there is a part of your brain that helps you determine what smell matches what object. Scientists experimented this with a mouse in a lab. When the mouse smelled odors it sent a pattern to a place in your brain called the cortex. Then you figure out what object that smell is matched to. It also said how this might be different for an animal that doesn’t live in a lab all day but lives in the wild.

I thought that this article was interesting. I thought it was cool to learn about how you identify smells. I thought that they used a lot of scientific terms that made this aricle harder to read. If I was the author I would have done a test with another animal before pulishing the article. Overall I tought that this article was kind of boring but the concept was interesting.

“Ancient footprints found in Mexico valley” by “Associated Press” from http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15425876/ on Thursday, October 26, 2006

A trail of thirteen fossilized footprints has been found in on northern Mexico, believed to be between ten thousand and fifteen thousand years old. These footprints are believed to have been made by hunter gatherers and could be among the oldest ever found in the Americas. However, they are not nearly as old as those found in Africa that are believed to have been made around three and a half million years ago. The footprints in Mexico were discovered in May embedded in a white rock called travertine. Scientists believe that they were preserved thanks to the fact that some natural phenomenon prevented them from being rubbed out and preserved them perfectly.

It is amazing that we can find the results of human life from prehistoric eras thousands of years ago and how much we can learn from them. Fifteen thousand years is along time for a few footprints to survive, and three and a half million years is even longer. I thought that the author created a perfectly detailed article yet kept it short enough not to bore. I enjoyed reading the article and I felt amazed by some of what I learned.

A Sour taste in your Mouth
    By: Emily Sohn
    http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20060830/Note3.asp
This article was about the sour flavor you get in your mouth when you taste lemons or vinegar. It tells about a protein called PKD2L1 which is what might do the trick. When the scientist found this protein it interested them because it did not show up in cells that sensed sweet, bitter, or umami flavors. The article goes on to tell about some experiments the scientist did with this protein. The scientists said that this discovery may eventually help chemists make foods more or less sour, from inside out.
I thought this article was really interesting. I personally do not like foods or candy that are really sour. But when I do try something sour and I get that sour look on my face and I wonder what makes that weird taste. That is why I choose this article. I found out about the sour flavor and how scientists are trying to find out where it comes from. Now I know a little more about it. I think the author Emily Sohn, who writes practically all the articles for Science News for Kids, explains her points very clearly. Her articles are easy to read and interesting. So, next time I eat a sour candy, I’ll know what is going on.

    Article by E. Sohn
    Summary
A crocodile’s heart is just like a mammals hearts. It is a muscle that pumps blood. One side of the heart sends blood that is full of oxygen out of the body. The other side pumps blood back toward the lungs to give it an oxygen refill. But the crocodile’s heart has an extra valve that mammal and bird hearts don’t have. In a crocodile’s heart, the blood goes strait to the body, unlike mammals and birds. It says that scientists X rayed a crock and found food in his stomach. The crock’s heart will help the food be digested.

    Reflection
This article was short and it was worth the time to read. It was a grate article. I would like to learn more about crocodiles. It is soooooooo amazing! I realized that a crocodile’s inner organ system works way better than a human’s.

    Weekly Science Report #6
The article I read was called Packing Fat it was written by Emily Sohn.

Summary: This article is about how scientists are worried that to many people in the world are becoming obese. Some people even say we have an epidemic. Over the last 10 years obesity has become twice as common for children 2-5, and over 9 million children is the United States over age 6 are obese!

Reflection: I really liked this article and I hope more kids will read it to find out about the problem. Maybe the more you know about obesity the harder it will be to become it. I think Emily Sohn did I good job with this article. She gave scientist quotes, facts and did a good job of researching this article. I found out a lot. I hope when kids see that the are becoming overweight the do something about it or there parents say something because I think that will help bring the percentage down.

    Getting Enough Sleep

From Science News for Kids Sept. 13, 2006.

Getting Enough Sleep is about how many kids are don’t get enough sleep, and then their school grades suffer. Recent studies have shown that teens may need more sleep than younger kids. Reading and watching TV make it worse because the light tells your brain that it is day time, so it is harder to fall asleep.

I liked this article because I have found that I am not getting enough sleep. The article says that ¼ + kids said they fell asleep more than once in school. Because of this, I think Mr. Ardito should give us (Period 8) a sleeping period one day. (hint hint) I had read another Emily Sohn article before and it was less than satisfactory, but this one was a really good one. Now I think I’m going to go to bed.

Title of Article: Saving Africa’s Wild Dogs
    Author : Emily Sohn
    URL: http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20060830/Feature1.asp

    Summery:
This article was about a man by the name of Gregory Rasmussen who is a conservationist and researcher. He takes care of the wild painted dogs and helps keep them from extinction.

    Reflection:
I found this article so interesting, and I think that this is one of Emily Sohn’s best articles that I have read so far. This article gave me great facts about the wild painted dogs living in Africa, and why they are becoming extinct.
One reason why they are almost extinct is most farmers think the wild painted dogs are eating their farm animals (cows). Thinking they do, farmers kill the poor dogs when they don’t even eat live stock!
Until now I have never herd of wild painted dogs, but I feel bad for them because the innocent dogs are also getting hit by cars, getting caught in traps, and some people don’t like them for no good reason. But I am also happy to hear there are people like Alison Nicholls and Gregory Rasmussen that help them. Whether it’s Alison’s job to paint pictures of the dogs and raise money for conservationists, or Rasmussen being a conservationist that tracks the animals down and helps the injured, they are both helping each other to help the endangered animals.

Fish Fossil Find by Claudia Atticot
The article I read is about a fish fossil that was found last week. Aparently this type of fish only lived 380million years ago. It is the only fish that actually has teeth from its time. I got this article from http://www.timeforkids.com.
I think it’s pretty cool that they found a FULL skeleton or close to one of a fish that is from millions of years ago. I never knew that fish could have teeth and since they used to, why don’t they have them now? This article is very interesting but I think it is to short, it needs to have a little more information. Hippo Sweat is
    Natural Sunscreen

    Author: Emily Sohn
    Date founded: June 2, 2004
    Founded: Science News For Kids.com

    Summary
Hippos have a weird gift that until now no one realized. Which was, when hippos sweat, that sweat is actually used as sunscreen for he hippos it also fights to kinds of diseases. The researchers found that the sweat’s red pigment keeps two types of disease-causing bacteria from growing. This may help explain why hippo gashes and wounds rarely seem to get infected, even though male hippos have frequent, fierce fights. This strange type of sunscreen also prevents these hippos from getting sunburn or maybe even skin cancer!

    Reflection
I think that it was very interesting but in a weird way that hippos sweat is sunscreen I also think that is very convenient gift to have. For example if their is a guy or girl that sweats alot while doing an outdoor activity like football or field hockey or some other sport like that, and lets say it is a hot humid day in the summer clear skies and the game is really long. Well then when he or she starts to sweat then the sweat works like sunscreen their is no worries about getting burned or cancer. So this sweaty sunscreen can be very helpful which is interesting but weird to me.

    “How Invisibility Cloaks Work”
    By: William Harris
I found this article at “howstuffworks.com

summary- Scientists at the University of Tokyo have developed a coat that can make you almost invisible by using optical-camouflage technology. If “bob” was looking at the coat wearer at a certain angel “bob” would be able to see through coat at what ever was behind “bob”.
The coat still has many limitations but still does its job.

reflection-I thought that this article was very interesting and made me want to try out the coat. If you go to the website and look at the pictures on the article you will see that you can still see the person but you can also see what is behind him which really makes you want to think. If this product is ever sold to the public I would buy it!

Study: Losing fat stimulated anti-tumor defense in mice
    By Lauren Neergaard
    http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/news/story.html?id=8dd179aa-287b-4140-8e12-e67de86a63a3&k=8457

Scientists in Washington have been experimenting on mice for tumor cures. They say that the studies show that fatty tissue may reduce the bodies ability to fight off cancer. The scientists found that if they made the mice leaner, by surgery or exercise, they fight off skin tumors better.
Everyone knows that overweight people have a greater risk of disease. But no one knows if sliming down can actually help. When a cell gets damaged, it self distructs. This is called apotosis, it helps clear out cells before they can grow into tumors.
The scientists gave the mice a running wheel. Each day the mice ran up to five kilometers a day. After two weeks, the mice had lost fat, which seemed to have triggered more apotosis, helping to fight tumors.
After this successful experiment, the team removed fat with surgery. This triggered cell tumor death. Now they are tying to figure out what caused it.
The scientists still have a long way to go to prove this will happen to humans.
I really found this article important. This could help the development for a cure for cancer. Not only that, but its a reason why people should get more exercise and stop eating at mcdonalds.

I liked your article, hippo’s are awsome. It’s kind of strange that their sweat protects them… But anyway, in the article you said that it might even protect them from cancer, sweet! It sounds kind of gross (I mean, REALLY gross) but do you think that hippo sweat might help protect humans from cancer, or even cure it?

I thought that your article was very interesting. I never would have guessed that monarchs would ever have a chance of going extinct. I just took them for granted. I found that global warming is having more of an effect than I thought. Great report!

I thought that your article was interesting but that you could proof-read your article before you post it. It was a little hard to understand. I disagree with the part about reading to fall asleep because I fall asleep within 10 minutes if I am reading. It usually takes me about 30 minutes without a book. Try to be clearer next time. Good job.

Your reflection was very confusing, and your summary said the sunscreen in the hippo was due to a red pigment, so it wouldn’t work with human sweat because we don’t have red pigment, so next time you’re around a hippo, could you pick up some sweat for me?

Second hand smoke affects pets, study says
    by Angela Hill
the link to this web site is http://www.canada.com/saskatoonstarphoenix/news/local/story.html?id=a29d05ca-ec1a-4b50-8671-a027eea014ac

The new university of Saskatchewan research, suggests that second hand smoke in a house hold with canines can result in cardiac decease for your dog. They decided to perform experiments to find out the effects.
They took eight dogs and put them in a healthy home and put six dogs and put them in a smoking home. To make sure that all the dogs were in prime conditions the scientists took blood tests and took EEG’s. After the dogs came back a test showed that the dogs in the smoking homes had more muscle on the left side of the heart. This was a sing of high blood pressure and the heart having to pump harder. In human conditions, similar sysmtoms lead to cardiac disease.
This Article is a cold reminder that we can hurt animals. If any of you readers don’t know what cardiac disease is, it can lead to a cardiac arrest -where your heart stops beating. Many people wouldn’t care if a dog got a disease, or maybe wouldn’t even notice, but I like how these scientists took the time to find out.

    http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20060920/Feature1.asp

In the article, “Sea Giants and Island Pygmies,” by Emily Sohn, The article talks about how in certain places animals are larger in some environment than they are in a different one.
I think that it’s cool how most animals come in all different sizes. I also think that it is interesting how the animals change in size depending on their environment. I wonder why the small shallow water snails are getting larger in deeper water and the large shallow water snails are getting smaller in deeper water, and vise versa for the deep water snails.

My article was call “mating slows down prairie dogs” http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20061018/Note2.asp

Summary: This article talks about how male prairie dogs are very distracted by women prairie dogs when its mating season. In those 17 days they are very unaware of things such as their predators. Since there are only 17 days to mate, the males put all their attention on breeding. Normally prairie dogs are very fast and tough.

Reflection: I really liked this article, the prairie dogs are so cute!
    /Users/leah/Desktop/a1264_1916.prairie.jpg

It was really interesting to learn more about prairie dogs because I remember doing a school project on them in fifth grade. The scientist say on average during this time about 26 prairie dogs die. I hope they don’t become instinct because they are really interesting animals to me.

    Missing Moose

    By Emily Sohn

    http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org

This article is about how moose are so hard to find.

I think it is bad that people aren’t seeing moose. They are such cool animals. There antlers can reach to a weight of 60 pounds! In Northwestern Minnosota in the 1980’s there was a population of around 4,000 moose. Now there is about 250 there. 250! Almost there entire population has wiped out there. In Northern Michican there was a population of about 2,000 moose. Now there is only around 450! Why are all these moose dying off? I don’t know but somebody should do something about this.

“Training Your Brain o Feel Less Pain”
    By: Emily Sohn
    December 21,2005

Training Your Brain to Feel Less Pain

this aritcle is about how people may be able to feel less pain, by thinking that they’re not feeling much pain. Scientis found that there was a lot of pain in the “rostral anterior cirgulate cortex”. Scientist did a test using eight people and utting heat on theirlegs to cause pain. The volunteers got to watch their brain’s pain level o n a screen(after they were hooked up to a machine). The volunteers were told to get their mind off the pain and they kept the flame ( that was represented by a flame) down. The scientists gave this “brain training” to eight people with the chronic pain, and the eight people reported feeling less pain.

I liked and disliked this article. ell, I liked the article because it explained how our minds can make us feel less pain. It was interesting how the volunteers with the chronic pain, felt better after they had this training. This study might help suffering people all over the world so it could develope HUGELY!

I liked your reflection. I also always wondered that. I think its because the shallower the water gets the less noticeable the snails should be. Maybe.

This comment is to FuNkYy MoNkEy.

I also had an article that had something to do with the cortex. It seems that the cortex has alot to do with how your brain connects with your body, becdause my article hads to do with pain on the outside of your body and then your is about connecting smell to the actual food. It was just a connection from my story to yours.

I agree with the author of the aritcle. Many kids in the U.S.A are getting heavier than supposed to. Even though many fast food restaurants are changing their ingredients as much as they can the kids will just find somewhere else to go. So its kinda a lose lose situation, for the retaurants that teh kids stop going to and the kids that get larger and larger.

    Saving Africa’s Wild Dogs

    By Emily Sohn

    http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org

This article is about how scientists are trying to save Wild Dogs from Africa from going extinct.

I think its bad whats happening to the Wild Dogs. They went from having a population of 500,000 or more to around 2,000. Part of the reason why the population has gone down so much is because starting about a century ago farmers thought that the Dogs were killing there animals. So the farmers killed the Wild Dogs. Scientist’s don’t belive that the Wild Dogs killed the animals. They just thought the people were prejudice. Greg Rasmussen went to Africa to observe the Dogs for a couple of days. The scientist said that the Dogs showed no sign of evil or anything bad. Scientists are trying to help save the Wild Dogs and I hope other people try to help to.
