Bang, Sparkle, Burst, and Boom
I love fireworks. I also loved the article Bang, Sparkle, Burst, and Boom by Emily Sohn in Science News for Kids.
The article, published June twenty-nine, twothousand five, was about fireworks. It explained how they worked and what they are made of.
I really like this article. I liked it for many reasons. For one, I loved the title. I mean, which article sounds better: Fireworks or Bang, Sparkle, Burst, and Boom? I choose option B. I also loved the beginning and end. The beginning sucked you in and the end wrapped up the whole article.
The only thing that would make this article better is better pictures. Fireworks can be amazing, the pictures of them should be amazig too.
I really liked this article and I think many people, even if they hate fireworks, would like it too.

I found the article “Cactus Amongus” by Ron Gelardi, in Conservationist magazine (June 2005).
The article was about a cactus living in Long Island and the Hudson Valley all year long. This cactus shrivels up in the winter time. It turns an ugly purplish, brown pink. Its seeds are spread around by the animals that eat the fruit that appears after the flowers die.
I did not like this article because I would rather be reading about space and the universe instead of plants and nature. However it was a little interesting because I never thought a cactus could live through the winter especially in New York State.

Striking Ferret 10/24/06
Internet Generation by Emily Sohn October 25, 2006
I found this article at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20061025/Feature1.asp
This article was about kids using the internet. It was also about how the internet can be good and bad for kids.
I think the author did a great job in expressing some of her main points. I think she did this when she was saying about how the internet can be bad for kids and she used the example: “a hiding place for kidnappers”. Also when she asked someone about the first time they used the internet and the lady said “pretty much all of them were attempted cyber-pickups”. I thought she also did a good job of expressing her main idea of how internet was a safe place for kids. I think she did that when she said that kids use the internet to do their homework or to e-mail their friends or their grandma. I also think she did a good job in expressing all of her other main points. What I think she could have done to make the article better is say more about how the internet is dangerous for kids.
Because even though what she already said about the internet being a dangerous place for kids she expressed her feelings well but she didn’t say much about the internet being a dangerous place for kids.

Fingerprint Evidence
By Emily Sohn
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/scripts
This article is about fingerprinting. They use it to detect people if they did a crime. The FBI, police and CSI (a TV show call Crime Scene Investigation) use fingerprinting to solve crimes. Fingerprinting was used over a thousand years ago.
I like this article because it had subtitles and pictures.
This article was a good article because it was spread out nicely and easy to read.
This article is about how they use fingerprints and how they can get fingerprints from ink then put them into the computer. They hope to use fingerprints for kids to get their lunch from some schools, to get money from ATM machines and to get into labs and buildings, etc. They now use fingerprint scanning in Disneyworld on annual season pass holders to get into the parks with out paper tickets.
Every person in the world has it’s own individual fingerprints. There are no two people that can have the same set.

Hotdawg911 “Invisibility Ring”
I thought that this article was well written, but C. Gramling left out a few important details; like, “What the heck is this “invisibility ring” used for!?” From what I read, it is a coaster shaped ring that, when put in or near microwave, sends back the waves from the microwave so that your eyes can’t see it. I think that it is just another advancement made toward the discovery of invisibility. Or, it might be something that is now being used in microwave. Who Knows? Also, this article is somewhat informative, but thoroughly interesting. The article also compares Harry Potter’s cloak to this new instrument (yeah, I was confused to).
If you want to, check this site out, and help me figure everything out:

Electric Backpack
Report written by Pooky star
I got this article at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com, and it’s written by E. Sohn
This article is about an electric making backpack that generates electricity by you walking. The back pack would be good for soldiers, scientists, mountaineers, and emergency workers who usually carry heavy backpacks. The article also explains how the backpack works and what it could be used for.
I thought that this article was really good; I learned that there are some really cool backpacks that generate electricity by the ups and downs of your steps this is how it works: As you walk, the cargo compartment jiggles and a special toothed rod (green) moves up and down, turning a gear mounted on a generator that produces electricity. I wished that they would sell it but they don’t sell the pack yet but if it was available in stores I probably wouldn’t be able to buy it anyway because it would cost a lot of money.

ATTACKING ASTHMA
BY: EMILY SOHN
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org
Written JAM
Asthma is becoming more and more common today. Between 1980 and 1996 the number of cases doubled in the U.S. Today, more then 20 million adults and 9 million kids have Asthma. New test and treatment have improved today. Most kids with Asthma can live normal lives. At least half of the people who suffer from asthma have allergies that can trigger an attack. Some people can sneeze when exposed to allergens while people with Asthma have much more of a reaction.
Scientist are studding to see what else can trigger Asthma like exercise or cooking odors. They hope to figure out what causes Asthma to find a way to prevent it. With a hope that someday find a cure. Alot of kids have limit activities because of asthma. It doesn’t have to be that way. Look at football player Jerome the “BUS” Bettis of the Pittsburgh Steelers Asthma has not stopped him!
This articial was very long but it had alot of information in it. I have Asthma and learned alot about the condition.

Sea Lilies On The Run
by
E. Sohn
October 26, 2005
This article, Sea Lilies On The Run, is about Crinoids, also called sea lilies. They live at the bottom of the sea and the are related to starfish and sea urchins. On the floor of the sea they mostly stay still and catch their food. They are called sea lilies because they look like flowers. Scientists have known that the sea lilies move, but they thought that they just crept along very slowly. Researchers looked at a video that was taken in 1990 and found that the crinoid moved at a faster rate. It showed the lily pulling itself with its arms, would move about 459 feet per hour. Researches think the these sea lilies run to get away from predators.
I liked this article because it was a quick, easy read, that was easy to understand. I picked this article because of the picture. I thought it was a picture of a cool looking flower, but then once I started reading I realized that it was a creature that lives under the sea and looks like a flower. It was a good article I enjoyed reading it.

The article I read is called, “Taking a Spill for Science”, by Emily Sohn. It is from Science News for Kids, March 8, 2006.
This article begins by saying how people falling can be funny, but is painful a lot of the time. Statistics say that one-third of adults over 65 fall each year, and that 20-30 percent they sustain serious injuries. Scientists wanted to know why some people are more prone to falling than others, so they studied healthy people and people who have more problems balancing, in order to help others improve their balance. The article goes on to say what balance is, why people are more likely to fall as they get older and how to take care of fears of falling.
I thought this article was really good. It made its point really easily and gave lots of details and information. One of the things that I think that made it really well written, that not all articles necessarily have, was the experiments description. Not only were the experiments the key thing that backed up all the idea, but they were thoroughly described. It didn’t only tell you “they did an experiment”, but it gave all the little details about the article. For example, when it tells you how people are learning to get over their fear of falling, it gave all the pieces of the environment they were working in. It told you right down to what was in the aisles of the virtual grocery store.
A final thought about the article; even though it was pretty long and had of lot of information, you could still process all the details because it is so well organizing and put together.

Insects
Kids Discover
By: Dr. James/L.Castener
This article had a lot of facts. Like that insects tell us what ancient species looked like. The cockroach has hardly changed in a millions of years. Insects make silk and honey. But they’re not all good. The Mexican bean beetle eats bean plants and leaving nothing but holes. Not all insects are bugs.
I enjoyed reading this article. I did not know some of the facts. It had good pictures. They had tones of facts. I liked who they gave good things and bad things. In the end I thought it was good.

Flying the Hyper Skies
S. McDonagh
Science News For Kids
This article talks about the fastest jet in the world. It explains how it works.
I liked this article. It was quick to the point. Right away is began talking about the jet. The article did a great job of explaining how the jet flies so fast. It uses something called a scram jet. The jet can go as fast as a rocket. It flew 7 times the speed of sound. The article really helped me understand how this happened. It said that in the future these jets could carry passengers in where in just a few hours.

Vampire Bats on the Run
By E. Sohn
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com
The article I chose is about vampire bats running. This discovery is very special because no species bat (that scientist study), can run. When scientist found out they w ere running it shocked them because bats can’t even support their own weight. Daniel Riskin of Cornell University set out traps for the vampires and caught some. He then put the bat on a treadmill and with a video camera that took pictures every 24 milliseconds reveled it strange style of running. He was surprised to see the bat running at 1.2 meters (about 4 feet) per second.
I thought that the article was very surprising and educational. Even though I am an animal lover, I did not know that vampire bat could even walk. I thought that the author did a good job explaining and backing up her ideas by saying who tested the animal’s species by putting it on a treadmill. I thought the article was great.

Copycat Monkeys
Emily Sohn
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20060913/Note2.asp#top
Scientists have been studying baby macaque monkeys and their ability to imitate human facial expressions. In response to the experimenter the baby macaques smacked their lips and stuck their tongues out but didn’t imitate any other behaviors. After 14 days none of the was copying the experimenters.
I think that Emily Sohn did a very good job on this article I loved the cute pictures of monkeys and the fact that as baby monkeys get older they begin to stop copying the volunteers as much and then not at all. This is strange because human babies and baby chimps are just the opposite they start to imitate others faces at 2-3 weeks of age and continue for a few months.

The article was written by E.Sohn, on october 4, 2003. I found the article on sciencenewsforkids.com.
Its about animals who sometimes love people or hate some people. scientists studied 40 zoos and 3 years. The found out that babies tend to die at higher rates. The animals include 35 meat eating animals. In the wild polar bears live in 1200 sq akers of land. Zoos might have to come up with better exibits to make the animals feel like home. I thought it was a good article but the author could have gave allitle more details. Thats about my article.

living in the desert
I found this article at sciencenewsforkids.com. It was written by Jennifer Cutraro. It was published on Nov. 1 2006.
This article is about how animals conserve water in the desert. The sand gazelle conserves water by shrinking its liver. Air travels to the liver and then the liver cleans the blood. If you exhale, you let out air. While you open your mouth, you let out saliva(water). If the liver shrinks, you won’t need more air. The sand gazelle can shrink its liver up tho seventy percent of it original size.
The kangaroo rat hardly ever open its mouth in the desert. It collects seeds with water in it. It also consumes its own urine. If a human tried to live off seeds, they would die.
The sand grouse travels about 40 mile to a body of water, wets its chest feathers, brings it back to its nest, and lets its chicks suck the water out of the feathers. The feathers are designed like a sponge.
I thought this article was long and informational. I liked the way she explained more than one animal and how it survives in the desert with water.

Internet Generation
By Emily Sohn
This article by Emily is about how kids these days are “Living in a virtual world”. How we use the internet so much, and how adults don’t. It also says, how scientists have begun to wonder if the internet is good for kids, what with chat rooms and sites like myspace.
This is a nice article, but could have been a little more jazzed up. Still, she uses very nice wording and this is overall a nice article.
