Weekly Science Article
Review: In the Monterey Aquarium, their specimen of the Great White shark became the first fearsome predator to ever eat food in captivity. The longest previous record for keeping a Great White shark alive in captivity was sixteen days. Researchers have high hopes that the Monterey Aquarium’s specimen of shark will help them to observe the feeding habits of Great Whites in general. In addition, tagging, or tracking of Great Whites in the wild has yielded surprising results to researchers that sharks that were thought to stay in one area for their entire lives, journey thousands of miles from California to Hawaii. The aquarium has high hopes for their captures shark, and say that it will probably not eat it’s fellow tank members.
Reaction: I think that this is a really great article, because it shows that just when we humans think we know exactly how an animal will behave, they will turn right around and stamp our theories into the ground. People were sure that sharks are non-emigrational creatures, when they actually swim thousands of miles, which is a pretty long trip, especially fro a creature of the Great White’s size. People also thought that sharks would not eat in captivity, because they were not used to this new, enclosed environment, and had been taken away from their habitats. This article was very exciting, and it shows how unpredictable animals are.

Why Sleep? Flies tell us why.
Sept. 21 2006
This article was about how Dr. Indrani Ganguly-Fitzgerald did an expirement to find out why things sleep. She did an expirement with fruit flys. She put baby fruit flys in 1 jar alone and put another group of fruit flys im a jar with grow-up fruit flys in a jar and the results showed that the babys with the BIG Fruit fly sleep more because they learned from the fruit flys and they needed to process what they learned into their brains.

Regarding PinkButterfly397′ article. That is quite amazing. This shows how babys need some parental guidance to acheive some of the most basic things in life. But, I don’t see a responce.

This article was very intresting. I thought scientist knew why peaple sleep and that they were certain about it. But I also find it very weird that scientist are comparing flys to humans. Now that they know why flys sleep because of what they learned. Now scientist think that this can helpthem cure dieses but what would happen if flys are way differant from humans and they could harm someone trying to fix the dieses!

Storing Memories before Bedtime
In this article, researchers thought that sleep was a time for the brain to process what it learn that
day but according to a new study the brain begings to process those memories long before you sleep.
To prove their point researchers did a test on 15 volunteers brains right before and after the tasks. They compaired two images to see whether the areas of the brain involved in learning tasks were still active even after the task was completed. After an hour the discovered that the brain stayed active and continues to process new information. Some scientists say that sleep isnt for storing memories, others disagree, but untill its proved they say we should still get plenty of sleep.

The Article I read was called “Seeds of Hope” written by Nellie Gonzalez Cutler. I found it in Time For Kids, week of September twentyninth.
“Seeds of Hope” is about all of the female farmers in Africa who’s farms grow fewer and fewer crops each year. It talks about a program called the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) that aims to help scientists breed crops that will grow better in Africa.
I think the author did a good job explaining what the AGRA plans to do to help the people in Africa with their farming problems. It says that “Kids are expected to help in the fields, which leaves them little time for school.” Then later it explains that 100 new crop varieties that are adapted to growing in Africa have already been developed, like the New Rice for Africa called NERICA. It also says that the children are spending less time working in the feilds and the school attendence is going up in the places where the new rice is being grown. The Gates Foundation has teamed up with the Rockefeller Foundation to raise money to help fight hunger in Africa. “The Gates and Rockefeller Foundation envision a new Africa, where farmers aren’t doomed to a life of hunger. They have started by planting a small seed of hope.”

The article I picked is called, “Picture This Smell,” by Sarah Webb. It can be found at the website http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20061011/Feature1.asp.
In the article, Webb talks about electronic noses and what they can do that human noses can’t do. For instance, electronic noses can sense substances that could be harmful to humans. Some electronic noses can sense things people can’t smell at all. Webb also tells the reader that researchers have even made an electronic nose to send into space!
I liked this article because it creates a funny picture in my mind. I imagine a person walking down the street with a large, fake, metal nose attached to their head. I imagine them smelling every different scent as they walk by; the smell of fresh food being served at a restaurant, the fumes from a car’s engine, a woman’s strong perfume… every smell gets picked up by their fake nose and they can’t help it. It would probably be really hard to have a fake nose because of how much stronger they are compared to real ones.

In your last paragraph though, you didn’t give much about your reaction.. you summarized a little more. I would have loved to hear more of your opinions on this article because it seems like something that has room for a lot of opinions. But that was still a very interesting piece!

Science Report
Archaeologist Betsy Bryan and her team, discovered a life size black stone figure of queen tiye. She was found in Luxor, Egypt, in a temple site. The reason why they believe she was queen Tiye, was because of her hair style and royal looking headdress. More than 3,000 years ago, queen Tiye was the most powerful women in Egypt. She was the first wife of Pharaoh Amenhotep3. Betsy Bryan also has reason to believe that queen Tiye ruled for a short period of time after her husbands death.
I think that this article was very well written and is very interesting. I just wish that the article would give some more information about how the archeologists and Betsy Bryan discovered the statue. This article makes me wonder about all the other undiscovered artifacts and other things that humans haven’t found. I think that every new discovery opens a bit more of the past up. Finding new things like this could prove more theories and help us to understand more about the past.

The article I found is called “Predator Control: Misguided and Pricey” by Tim Vanderpool. My source was a Wildlife Conservation magazine.
The article is about how people in southern Arizona are killing wildlife without informing the people who live there. Airplanes fly low to the ground as a person leans out with a gun and fires at coyotes, foxes, mountain lions, and other predators. After three weeks, their work is done, leaving about 200 dead coyotes and other animals across the Coronado National Forest which is private property. Usually the government will shoot up to 100,000 animals each year. The only reason they are doing this is to exterminate as many as possible to protect livestock and crops. The extermination is also not very cheap. To shoot, poison, and trap these animals costs about $10 million every year. The government is not informing the people about this because they are afraid of public outrage. This puts hikers and campers in danger. There are better ways to protect livestock. You could use fences, or maybe donkeys, llamas, and dogs as guard animals.
I think that this article is very interesting and I’m glad that I read it. Something like this should be put to a stop at once. For more ionformation, log onto the Predator Conservation Alliance Web site at http://www.predatorconservation.org.

The article I found is called “Predator Control: Misguided and Pricey” by Tim Vanderpool. I found it in a Wildlife Conservation magazine.
The article is all about how the government is shooting wildlife in southern Arizona. Airplanes fly low to the ground as people with guns reach out the side door and shoot animals like coyotes, foxes, mountain lions, and other types of predators. After three weeks, their work is done. They have killed about 200 animals, mainly coyotes. Some 100,000 animals are killed a year across Coronado National Forest which is private property. The government is trying to exterminate as many animals as possible to help protect livestock. There are other ways it could be done though. To protect livestock, you could build a fence or have dogs, llamas, or donkeys as guard animals. These ideas are also much cheaper than the extermination process is. To kill, poison, and trap this wildlife costs about $10 million a year. The government is not informing the people because they are afraid of public riots. This has put campers and hikers in danger.
I think this is a great article, and i’m glad I read it. I believe that things like this should be dealed with right away, as people are hopefully doing now. For more information, log onto the Predator Conservation Alliance Web site at http://www.predatorconservation.org.

Flying the Hyper Skies
Flying the Hyper Skies
Emily Sohn
http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org
This article is about a Jet Fighter plane called the Hyper-X was at a record for air-breathing jet planes went at a speed of 5,000 miles per hour!!! That is really really fast. It is hypersonic speed of seven times the speed of sound. It can go around the whole earth, on the equater, in less than 5 hours!!!!
My response part for this article is very interesting because this article interested me a lot. This Hyper-X fighter jet goes extremly fast, i mean 5,000 miles per hour is really fast you can get to a lot of places in no time wasted at all. This would be a good tool for the army because if we are need to get into a country fast and bomb them we can use this jet. They wouldn’t be able to shoot the jet down because it would be going so fast. I don’t think that you can drop a bomb out of the jet if it is going at that speed and you can’t even open any part of the jet because if you do you would get sucked right out and if you didn’t you wouldn’t be able to breathe anyway. The plane can only last for 11 seconds going at that speed but still you can do that one time to get away. It probably still went far into like more than one state probably. This author always leaves like one or two details out of the article but they are small ones though just questions. Is NASA ever going to make a jet that goes that speed but stay in the air for a longer period of time like an hour or so. I have never been on a plane before so i don’t know how it is like but when i do i will know. This was a good article and i was interested in the article because i have never been on a plane and the plane/aircraft can go so fast.

Weekly Science Report
Author: Reuters
Article Name: “U.S., Russian Scientists Discover New Element”
Where it Can be Found: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15293607/print/1/displaymode/1098
This article is about how a team of American and Russian scientists discovered a new element that is the heaviest element yet. They named it element 118, or ununoctium. Element 118 only existed in three different atoms lasting less than a second over months of experiments. To make element 118, scientists bombarded californium with calcium ions. Element 118 was originally found in 2002, but again was found twice in 2005. Currently, the team is looking to discover element 120.
I thought this article was really cool and interesting. Even though I do not know much about the periodic table, I think it is amazing how a team of scientists can make a new element by combining different things. I wonder why they decided to try to make it. Can ununoctium be used in some form of a bomb, or used to make new things that we might need to better our country? I think it is interesting how they decided to use californium and calcium ions to make it. Why those?
I looked up californium and californium is a synthetic radioactive metallic chemical element. It is a neutron. Calcium is a soft silver-white metallic element that is an alkaline earth metal.
Even though I am not sure how or why they made this new element I still think it’s cool that scientists are still trying to find new elements even though from what the periodic table looks like it does not look like we need anymore. I look forward to following up on this article by reading about element 120 and seeing how they came up with it.

Weekly Article
I read the article “The Effects on The Inhabitants of a City Explosion of a Nuclear Bomb”, by Allen F. Phillips. I chose this article because of the nuclear testing in North Korea. I searched for an article using google.com, and came up with this. The article was about the effects if a nuclear bomb hit America. It first explains how depending on strong the bomb was, and where it was dropped, how it would effect the area it hit. A flash of light a thousand times brighter than a lightning bolt would be the first action resulting from the bomb, if it was dropped 2,500 meters above the ground. This would permanently or temporarily blind everyone within 80 kilometers. The next affect would be a huge ball of fire, giving of extreme amounts of heat. Than a blast wave would hit and knock down many buildings. After this, tornadoes would hit, and radiation would take affect.
I think the article is good, even though it is out of date. I didn’t like all of the spelling mistakes in the article, it seemed very amateur like. I did like how it broke each result of the bomb into a different section. This made it much easier to read. I also liked how it had much information, almost too much, but it made thing easy to understand. I think this article was made more for everyone, it wasn’t hard to read, but interesting enough for teenagers, kids, and adults. I didn’t like how it used the metric system.

This is from moi171:
Tiger cubs
When a tigress in a California zoo gave birth, her rare triplet of cubs died of complications. She began to deteriorate. Veterinarians examined her and found that there was nothing physically wrong with her. She eventually was diagnosed with depression, and then veterinarians realized that she was depressed by the loss of her cubs. They thought that if they got her “replacement” cubs, she might come out of the depression. They searched and asked zoos around the country, but none of the zoos had cubs the right age. Most of them were too old. So they tried to find an alterative to new cubs. They came up with an idea that had never been tried in zoos before: they took a litter of small weaner pigs and made them “shirts” of tiger skin, and introduced them into the pen! Guess what happened: the mother tiger accepted them.
Vets thought that she would accept them because other animals have accepted other species as their offspring or parent. What I found amazing about this article was that it was written over three years ago and I have never heard about it. Also, I was astonished that the mother tiger never realized that here brood had quadrupled in size, grown smaller, smelled different, and were pink instead of orange and black. I think that the auther did a great job into packing so much information into such a short article. Weather the pigs became lunch, remains to happen.

Report: Fish-Mercury Risk Underestimated
By CNN News
Posted: April, 12, 2001
Mercury was found in fish and now mercury contaminations are spreading throughout CNN News says “That Pregnant woman should only eat 14ou. of fish a week, to reduce risk of hurting there baby child” Also they said that young children and people that are at the age of becoming pregnant should eat moderate amounts of fish per week.
This story influenced me because it shows that eating a food can be a risk of pregnancy. I think that something can be changed and things have to be done to help this problem. But CNN did say “Fish such as farm-raised trout and catfish, shrimp, fish sticks, flounder (summer), wild pacific salmon, croaker, mid-Atlantic blue crab and haddock would not be harmful to pregnant woman” Some woman are probably worried about this problem. Some thing needs to be done to fix this problem

The article “Shark Attack” is by international shark file Florida Museum of Natural History, University of Florida & photos by Steve W. Ross at http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/fish/sharks/attacks/perspect.htm
This article is about shark attacks and how they are actually very rare. In this article it says that shark attacks actually weren’t that important to the public until the movie “Jaws”, than people feared sharks. Did you know it is thirty times more likely to get struck by lightning than die from a shark attack? In the article it says that most people don’t die from the shark attacking them but more from cardiac arrest or drowning.
I think this was in interesting article. I thought a shark attack would kill you. I didn’t know that you would die from either cardiac arrest or drowning. This article was easy to understand and not too hard to read. The pictures added to the article. They show that humans are more lethal to sharks than sharks are to humans.

My article is about North Korea claiming they have maid a nuclear bomb. They said they were testing it underground but some intelligence officials believe that the were years away from creating a nuclear bomb.
The reason i think this has to do with science is because nuclear bombs kill biomes and ecosystems. I picked this article because it sort of has to do with my groups game board too. In my opinion, killing people is so stupid. A lot of countries are against each other but they don’t go straight to war. I know that the thing with North Korea is stupid but who’s going to listen to a thirteen year old?

Astronomers have discovered a new plant that use to goes by the name as Xena its now goes by the name of Eris after the Greek god strife. Eris moons name is Gabrielle it was named after a TV show (Xena Gabrielle). The show was about a warrior princess and her companion. The names where never meant to stay like that forever it was just a place holder until Astronomers could all deiced on a name.
I felt this article was very interesting. I thought it was very unlikely that they named a TV show after a very small plant even if it was a place holder really you don’t see a plant called Spongebob Squarepants even thou that would be a very odd name for a plant to be called. I also found it weird how they call it a Dwarf planet I mean really I don’t think its that small its really big compared to how big we are the planet should be calling all humans Dwarfs. That concludes my weekly science report.

Found In National Geographic
Article by Virginia Morell
Recently, scientists have reason to believe that ancient sea monsters once ruled the sea. One of the monsters researched was called the Shonisaurus sikanniensis. The scientists think that it must have been 75 feet long in length. Resembling a shark, but even larger than a sperm whale, this ancient creature was found as a giant skeleton found by paleontologist Elizabeth Nicholls. Another creature discovered is called the Temnodontosaurus. It could see in almost complete darkness and dive 2,000 feet into the water in search of food. Its eyes were almost 10 inches across. The name means “cutting tooth” which explains a lot because of the fact that it eats squid. The ticinosuchus is another discovered sea monster. They are said to be one of the earliest reptiles. With sharp teeth and long necks, as well as great swimming ability, this monster was one of the safest animals to land (Terrestrial) predators.
This article was very interesting to me because I think it is cool that scary ancient sea monsters use to be real. Everyone told me that the loch ness monster, otherwise known as nessie, was not real. But now that scientists have proven that other sea monsters use to be real makes me very interested in the things they will discover next.

Dear PinkButterfly — Fruit flies and humans share about 70% of their genes. So, while it is difficult to pinpoint the genes that affect behaviour, or sleep, or memory in humans, it is easier to do so in flies. Now that I have a list of a few genes that affect sleep and memory in flies, I will be able to investigate if the same genes are present in humans, and if so, how do they affect sleep and memory. Hope this answer helps.

I think that dogs are a genetic fluke, and that they are nothing more that a mutant wolf. evolution is undoubtedly linked to dogs, but only after they mutated from the wolf. it had to be linked because the dogs evolved into seperate groups with seperate purposes; Ex. weiner dogs were breed to hunt rats, and poodles were meet to retrive fallen prey in the water(their fur kept the boyant).
