A Puffy Planetary Puzzle by E. Jaffe, September 20, 2006

    On http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20060920/Note3.asp

This article was about how they found a new planet. It was also about how the scientists are puzzled about the new planet.
I think the author did a good job in supporting his main points. I think he did a good job when he used a quote from a scientist: “We have a bit of a puzzle”. I think that really supported the main idea of scientists being puzzled about the planet. I also liked how he put pictures in the article. When he said that HAT-P-1b (the name of the planet) was the biggest planet in our solar system I wasn’t sure how big but then he showed a picture of HAT-P-1b compared to Jupiter and it was about three and a half times bigger than Jupiter. I think he also supports one of his other main ideas well when he says that HAT-P-1b has a surprisingly low density. Even though it is bigger than Jupiter, it’s only half of Jupiter’s mass, making it a puffy giant. So I think this author did a very good job on naming this article. I think he could have said why HAT-P-1b is called what it is called to have improved this article. I also think he could have improved this article by saying what the regular density of a planet is so that anybody who reads this article can compare Hat-P-1b’s density to a regular planet’s density instead of just saying it has the lowest density.

Gone for decades, Jaguars Steal Back to the Southwest 10-17-06

    By Sandra Blakeslee

Article from The New York Times

After reading this article I learned how organizations are working to protect the Jaguar in one or both countries. Recently Jaguars have been spotted in ranges of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico. Experts don’t even know how long they have been sneaking back to their breeding grounds in Mexico. Their presence has set off confusions on both sides of the boarder. Conservationists are developing incentives to stop bounty hunters in Mexico from killing the big cats. Jaguars are the largest Native American cat.

I agree that environmentalist should declare parts of Arizona and New Mexico habitat for Jaguars. I believe that Jaguars should not be killed because I don’t think they really are a threat to society. I really enjoyed reading this article!

    Getting Enough Sleep
    Emily Sohn
    Science News for Kids

This article explained why enough sleep is important. It explained why you should get it and how to help you fall asleep.

I liked this article a lot. Rather than just saying you need sleep it said why, said how you can get more and gave examples from polls. The article said that people who don’t get enough sleep are late for school or miss it completely. There grades begin to fall as well. The article said that every body has a “master clock” and when it the body sees dark it thinks it night time and when it sees light it thinks it is daytime. For kids who have a t.v. in there room there body can think it is day when the t.v. is on. The article gave great examples of polls of kids. It said that only 20% of kids in America get the recommended 9 hours of sleep per night and on school nights 45% get less than 8 hours of sleep per night. It also said that one quarter of all kids fall asleep at least once a week during school. This article was very well written. It went a lot deeper then just you should get more sleep.

    Dancing with Robots

    Report written by Pooky star

I got this article at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com written by Sarah Webb.

This article is about a tournament with Lego robots that includes three challenges. The teams don’t do all of them, they only do one:

    • Soccer Game

    • Search and Rescue Course

    • Dancing

This article also tells about how some teams learned from their mistakes and adjusted their robot to make its performance better for their challenge. This article also tells about how some of the robots work.

I thought that this article was interesting because I learned that the robots are actually made out of Lego’s, that the robots can play soccer with each other, that they can go up steep ramps, nobody can control them once they are in their challenge, and that robots can actually dance. I really liked how the article included pictures and a few quotes. Another cool part is when it said how some of the soccer robots “kicked” the soccer “ball”. But I thought that the article should include more about building the robots and how they worked.

    STICKING IT TO WARTS
    BY SHARON THOMPSON

When it comes to getting rid of warts the traditional treatment is liquid nitrogen, a supercold liduid that can be used to freeze warts. A study at Madigan Army Medical Center found covering a wart with duct tae works better and is a less painful way to remove it than applying liquid nitrogen. 85% of kids who tried the duct tape treatment saw their warts disappear, compared with just a 60% rate among those who used liquid nitrogen. The author did not explain how the duct tape got rid of the wart. I was thinking maybe there is something in the glue that makes it work so well.

    Article Address:
    http://sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20060405/Note2.asp
This article is called “Storing Memories before Bedtime” by C. Gramling. I got it from Science News for Kids, April 5, 2006.

This article begins by telling you how a good night’s sleep can permanently help your brain remember lessons learned during the day. It goes on to say that based in new research, your brain starts storing the memories way before you go to sleep, and also can keep doing so while your mind is on other things. Scientists did an experiment to see figure out how people’s brains manage memories during awake hours. After doing this experiment, the scientists determined that distracting people doesn’t effect how they process information, and that sleep is not necessarily needed for memory.

I thought this article was confusing. It was good, but it could be clearer. I think that this article could be divided up into smaller sections. Sometimes, when everything is together in one piece, it makes the article more annoying to take in. I really liked how the writer described the experiment so well, because it made the article more interesting, instead of just saying they did an experiment. I really didn’t know any of the information about sleep helping you store memories so the whole article was pretty new to me, which is part of the reason why I chose it.

Other then the fact that it was confusing; it was a really well researched article. The best thing about it was all the interesting facts and details. I think that even though it was relatively short, it still told you more than enough about the subject.
Overall, I thought this was article was good, and breaking it up into smaller pieces would only make it easier to read and understand.

    “Mating Slows Down Prairie Dogs”
    By C. Gramling

I found this article at http://sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20061018/Note2.asp It was written by C. Gramling.
This story is about how when male prairie dogs start to mate it slows down everything else around them. Usually, the male prairie dogs are very tough and strong. When they start to mate, they don’t pay attention to predators or anything else. There are only seven-teen mating days in a year, and five hours out of those seven-teen days, the females can be pregnant. So, when it is time for the prairie dogs to start mating, the male prairie dogs focus their entire mind on it, and don’t pay attention to anything else.
I had read an article by C. Gramling before, and I hated it. I thought that she should have never written another article again. She didn’t have enough information. But now that I read this article, I think she’s gotten a little better. But, I don’t think it was that good. It was still pretty short, but more info and kept me entertained. I would like to read more of her writing, and try to see her progress.

How A Venus Flytrap Snaps shut
    By
    E. Sohn
This article, How a Venus Flytrap Snaps Shut, is about how the Venus Flytrap shuts. It explains that when plant closes its leaf on a fly it is one of the fastest movements in the plant kingdom. Scientist have researched and come up with an eplaination of how these flesh eating plants close. Researchers found that the shape and structure allow the plant to snap shut on insects in just a tenth of a second. They found it is geometry and not the plants muscles. Researchers found through microscope and from taking high speed video that when a insect lands on the plant the cells on the outside of the plants leaves get longer while the cells on the inside stays the same. This makes the leaves want to curl inward and makes it resist the inward push. The researchers measurements showed that pressure builds up before about a second until the leaf cannot take it anymore. The leaf than takes less than a second to snap shut.
I liked this article because I thought it was very interesting. I had learned about these plants on the Disney Channel, and I think it is cool how they snap shut. I thought it would be interesting to learn how they snap shut. I thought the article was persuasive because it had a lot of facts and details. A team of researhers and a mathematicians did a study and took high speed videos. I think this is a good interesting article because it is a quick read, with a lot of facts and it is easy to understand.

    A Dino King’s Ancestor
    By E.Sohn
    http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com

The article that I chose is about an early ancestor of the Tyrannosaurus rex. The paleontologist found the remains of a Guanlong wucaii which is the oldest known dinosaur that is belongs to the tyrannosaur’s family. This dino lived about 160 million years ago. The name Guanlong wucaii means “crowned dragon from the five colored rocks.” This dinosaur was 3 meters (9.8 feet) long and it hade a crest on it’s head (6 centimeters, 2.4 inches).
I thought that this article was very interesting because when you learn something new it makes you want to learn more about that particular subject. Learning about the past is very exciting. I think the author did a great job describing the discovery but not enough information about the dinosaur. Maybe telling the reader more about it’s height, weight, size, what it did ect…

I found This article called Dead Star Exploding by Emily Shon at a web site called sciencenewsforkids.com/articles/20060809/note2.aspit talks about what happens when a star explodes. I think that the author (Emily Shon )did a good job at supporting her main idea by putting in pictures.
The article is about the most powerful type of explosion called a supernova. It is so powerful that produces a strong wind that blows matter on to a neighboring star. When enough stuff builds up on the neighboring stars surface an explosion takes place. I wouldn’t do any thing to the article be because it has all the main ideas in it and support her main idea very well.

    MY WEEKLY SCIENCE REPORT

The name of my article is called a World of Three Suns and it is by E. Sohn. I found this article at http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org

The article is about a planet in the Milky Way that has three suns. Astronomers from the California Institute of Technology recently spotted a planet, which is a similar size and composition as Jupiter. The new object (they don’t know if it is a planet or not) orbits a round one star that is close to two other stars. The sun trio is called HD 188753. The stars in HD 188735 are so close together ( about as far apart as Saturn and our sun) that their gravity would not allow room for the planet.

Well I liked the article but I do not get why astronomers name the odd object a weird names like HD 188735 If I found some thing like that I would NOT name it some thing like that. The author did a good job because he explained how far apart the suns were but he did not say how far the object is from the suns and he did not say were the object was found because were ever this is there could be a lot more were this came from. Next if I was him I would try to tell were the planet was farther then Pluto or it was up or below our planet.

    Weekend Weather Really Is Different

This Article was written be E Sohn on October 13, 2003. It can be found on the website address: http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20031015/Note3.asp

    Summary

This article talked about how weekend weather can be different than weekday weather. For instance though it could be sunny all through the school week, when the weekend finally comes it could be pouring rain, that’s how the weather changes. Some of it though is air pollution. Through this article this topic is talked about.

    Reflection

I thought this article was very good. I thought this because it had a very good length, so I wouldn’t get bored. The vocabulary was great and easy to understand.
Only one part I had some trouble with, it said something about windborne particle in California on weekdays would first affect the Southwest and then move to the Midwest area.
The beginning also draws you in. It says “Do you feel like the weather’s out to get you?” When I read that I got very interested in this article.
The fact that they provided an image was also very helpful for me to comprehend the information.
    It was a great article!

    Electricity
This article is the time line of electricity.

I thought it was good because I didn’t know that much about electricity. In 1663 Otto von found that spinning a rubbing a sulfur ball it makes static electricity. Lightning is another form of static electricity.
I never knew that Luigi discovered that dead frog legs placed on a zinc tray when touched by an iron scalpel that has been electrically charged. 1879 Thomas Edison made the invented the first light bulb. I never knew that much about electricity. And I think this article.

Protecting Cows, and People, from a deadly Disease

When I read Protecting Cows, and People, from a deadly Disease, I wasn’t intersted at all. It was really boring.
The article, by E. Sohn, was about mad cow disease, a fatal illness that cows and humans can get. The article, published 1/14/04, explained about the sickness, it’s symptoms, and many other things you should know.
But it wasn’t the topic that was so boring, in fact I find the disease interesting. It was just the way Sohn wrote the article that was so boring.
For one, the title was not interesting to kids at all. And since I got this article from Science News for Kids, everything about it, including the title, should be kid friendly.
I also didn’t like the body of the article. While there was one nice picture and i good opening sentence, the article was dull and plain. If I didn’t have to write a report on it, I would have put it down after the first paragraph.
The article, however, did give good information about the illness and would have been very usefull if I was studying it.
While this article had good information for reaserch, it was boring for kids like me.

Curioser and curiouser, NASA plans to ‘Image’ a black hole
    By Dan Vergano
    From USA Today-Oct 10, 2006

This article is about how NASA and scientists have captured the closest thing to a image of a black hole. They have examined X-rays given off by the disks around near by super-size black holes. Scientists could than describe the black hole’s tilt and spin speed. I have learned that these black holes are millions to billions times heavier than the sun. Also, these X-ray images from the galaxies will help to piece together an X-ray of the black hole.
I enjoyed reading this article because it taught me how NASA is planning to image this black hole. I hope to find out more information about this in the near future.

    Science Article
    Found in National Geographic
    Article by Jeffery Sangalli

Paleontologist Olivier Rieppel found a fossil looking something like the offspring of a turtle and a manta ray. It body was wider than it was long, and had a bony shell. Scientists recognized it as a species called the Henodus. It was part of an ancient group of marine reptiles called placodonts, which used their flat teeth to crush bottom dwelling shellfish.

This article shows how many undiscovered fossils, clues, and spices haven’t found yet. I think it is so cool that so many discoveries have been made and there is yet to be more. In the article, I wish that Sangalli explained more about the fossil and about the marine creatures it is related to. That would make the article much more interesting for me to read.

Moving Good Fats from Fish to Mice

Fish is good for you, but if you cant stand eating it it might be good. Omelets, hamburgers and other foods could have some health benifits without smelling like the ocean. Fish like trout and salmon ate packed with omega-3 fats. These fats are much better for you then omega-6 fats found in red meat.Omega-3fats make your heart healther- Omega-6 dont. Worms have a gene that comverts Omega-6 to Omega-3. Scientists tryed to take some particular gene that does this and put it into mice. After 8 weeks, muscle tissue from the experimental mice had more Omega-3 fats then Omega-6. Normal mice have way more omega-6 then omega-3, wich means it was a huge improvement.

    Weekly Science Report
    Keeping Bugs Away From Food

I found this article on the website: http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20050525/Note3.asp
And it was written by Emily Sohn.
    Summary

This article talked about how scientist are creating a new invention. They have made containers coated with Citronella (a scent extracted from grass). Doing a test they have concluded that Citronella is one of the scents bugs hate the most. This way as you eat at a picnic or just anytime outside bugs won’t get on your food if they are in those containers. It talks about this through the article.

    Reflection

I thought this was a very good article. I had a lot of fun reading it. It was a little short though, I would’ve loved to find out more information about the containers. Though over all I really liked it. The vocabulary was right at my level. I really learned a lot. I had no idea that bugs hated plant extract smells. I would recommend this to anybody looking for something to learn! And the images helped too. Though the bugs kind of made me laugh! All in all it was a great article.

    A change in leaf color
    By Emily Sohn
    Date made: 9/27/06

In this article, Emily talks about the change of leaf color. She talks about how, when leaves stop absorbings the suns light, do to shorter days in the winter, they die. In the summer, the leaves are green, because they absorb all color from the sun exsept for green. However, due to the fact that in the fall, there is not as much sun, so they do not get the rays and heat they need. This, again, is a well writen artcle by Emily. She uses nice photos, and very nice wording. A little dull in some spots, but overall, quite nice.

    Butterfly Wings and Waterproof Coats

    Report written by Pooky star

I got this article from http://www.sciencenewsforkids.com and it is written by E. Sohn.

This article is about how with butterfly wings and lotus flowers are completely water proof and how scientists have been trying to make a perfactly waterproof cloth and failed. Some scientists in Japan have discovered that by studying the butterfly wings and made a waterproof martial. Another group in Turkey used a common kind of plastic to make a different waterproof material, almost like the leaves of the lotus plant.

to Maximumpower4334 i think that it is really cool that the leaves are green in the summer because they absorb all the colors exept for green.
